World Cup 2010 Arrives in Style!

South Africa in Nike Elite
South Africa in Nike Elite

Today saw the start of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and one thing is for sure, the Nike Elite range is doing its job! The Mach Purple and Total Orange colorpattern is designed to allow other players to see you on the pitch. While watching the opening game between South Africa and Mexico all I could see was the boots! Both goals were also scored by players wearing the Nike Elite range. South Africa’s goal was scored by Siphiwe Tshabalala’s, who wears the Nike CTR360 Elite, and if you saw it you will know that they also offer power. What a goal that was!

But the presence of Adidas was also felt, with the Adidas F50 adizero being worn by South African Steven Pienaar, Tsepo Masilela and Lucas Thwala. In other news, I was extremely pleased to see Uruguay hold France to a 0-0 draw, although I do think Diego Forlan (and his Adidas adizero’s) could have stole all three points with the volley he skewed wide in the final ten minutes. And what is with Thierry Henry calling for a handball in the box? Very Ironic!

  • I spotted a pretty comprehensive post over on the New York Times, where they put together some great info on soccer cleats going into the World Cup. The article is entitled Happy Feet or Kicking It New School.
  • Tomorrow at the Nike Montalban Theatre, we will be watching the England vs USA game followed by the final of the WTF Futsal league. TheFinalThird have the full scoop.

  1. i dont like the fact that 80% of the players are wearing the same colour boot.

you cant even tell which one is which from the nike range.

it woul've been better if everyone wears the normal nike cleats so we see more colours and variety on the pitch!

beside, nike said that it'll be easier to spot your teammate, but honestly if everyone is wearing the same colour i cant see any any advantage in that.

i dont like the colur. i think it's boring. That's just my opinion.

    • Ali,
Great point and I do agree with you. It is all well and good that other players can see you easier, but if the defender is wearing the same boots there ends up being no advantage!

  2. I noticed majority of the players worn the new color way by Nike. High percentage, while Adidas’s cleats … nah, not so much impressed. I own the Predator X Champions League color way, as I do say that the cleats are quite heavy. I own the previous version of the Adidas Adipure ( Adipure II ), the insole was not on the comfort side, hence, I am staying away from the Adipure III. I will try the F50 AdiZero next, I wondered if the fitting is as tight / snug like the Nike Superfly II ( I tried on at the local store ). I’ll keep you guys posted.
