Women’s World Cup – What They Are Wearing

Womens WC Germany

This Sunday the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in Germany, and I am personally very excited for the tournament to get underway. there has been a lot of hype surrounding the US team, and in my opinion they have an excellent chance of taking home the cup. Since I haven’t really featured women’s footwear that much, I thought this would be a good opportunity to highlight some of the players to watch at the World Cup, as well as feature some of the more popular women’s colorway releases.

Marta

Marta (Brazil) – Puma V1.11
Since 2006, Marta has been the undisputed best Women’s player in the world! The Brazilian has won the Women’s player of the title for 5 consecutive years and has already scored 76 goals in 69 international appearances. For those of you that follow WPS, you will have seen her in action over the past few seasons. Her boot of choice this past season was the Puma V1.10, so I expect to see her in the newly released women’s Fluo Green Puma V1.11.

Abby Wambach (USA) – Nike CTR360 Maestri II
Having scored 118 goals in 157 caps, Wambach is one of the keys to a successful tournament for the US. She reached the century goal mark faster than any other American player. Wambach was wearing the Tour Yellow CTR360 in recent weeks, but it seems like she will be wearing the new White/Chlorine Blue colorway come game time.

Inka Grings (Germany) – Puma V1.11
Currently one of the most explosive players in Women’s soccer, German Striker Inka Grings has an unrivaled instinct when she gets around the penalty area. She will be wearing the new Puma V1.11 and I expect her to be one of the top scorers in the tournament.

Homare Sawa (Japan) – Adidas adiPower Predator
For more than a 15 years, Sawa has been the engine room of Japan’s team. This will be her fifth World Cup and astonishingly, she has scored 75 goals from her midfield position! The recently released Adidas adiPower is the ideal boot for Sawa’s playing style – expect to hear her name quite often through the tournament.
