Mexico Win Gold Cup – Who Was Wearing What

The Gold Cup Final turned out to be a classic, with Mexico managing to come from 2-0 down to secure a 4-2 victory over the US. In all honesty, Mexico deserved to win it, but the US certainly put in a spirited performance and will be dissapointed with how the game panned out. With the victory, Mexico will now play in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

With all the being said, here is a review of the key players in the game and what they were wearing – with a showcase game like the Gold Cup final, you are always going to see an interesting mix of the best boots. And this game didn’t lived up to expectations!

Scoring without a doubt the best goal of the final, Giovanni Dos Santos went old school and wore a pair of the original CTR360 Maestri in Blue Sapphire (seen above). I have a feeling many players will be looking for a pair about now – the only place I could find them available was on eBay.

Pablo Barrera got two huge goals for Mexico while wearing the Nike Superfly III in the all new Granite/Solar Red – and what an impression to make in the unusual colorway! He certainly made them look good and he is probably top of Nike’s list of Christmas cards right about now. Looking at them in play, they are not what I expected and I have t admit they are not as bland as I first thought!

Landon Donovan stuck with the Tour Yellow CTR360 Maestri and got his goal. Again, I was under the impression that the Gold CTR360 would be used during the tournament but apparently not! Freddy Adu was the surprise starter in the US line-up and he also wore the Tour Yellow version. Adu got an assist on the first goal and was involved in the build up for the second.

Javier Hernandez again put in a terrific performance, although he didn’t get on the score sheet for once. Rather than going for the new Nike Tiempo Legend IV, Chicarito stuck with the White/Black/Volt version of the Nike Tiempo III. And, in another twist, he used the regular soleplate rather than the Elite version. (PS. you can’t currently pick up a pair for a incredible $75!!!)

US midfielder Alejandro Bedoya took to the field wearing the all new Puma V1.11. He really didn’t get a chance to shine in the game, but the new Fluo Green colorway was definitely very easy to spot!

Finally, Israel Castro and Eric Lichaj were the first player I have spotted wearing the new Black/White/Challenge Red version of the CTR360 Maestri II. In my opinion they are a great looking boot, and thanks to Castro’s performance, I think they complimented the Mexican kit best.
