Those of you that tuned into the USWNT game versus Mexico last night might have noticed that Abby Wambach was sporting a rather unusual pair of boots. They were a personalized pair of Mercurial Vapor IX that Nike created just for Wambach, in recognition of her record breaking goal scoring at international level. We have called these the “159 Goal” edition, for obvious reasons!
Wambach extended her world record with her 161st international goal after only 11 minutes. She broke Mia Hamm’s international mark of 158 goals in the U.S. team’s last game and these boots pay homage to the 159th goal that broke the record. On Tuesday night, she played a part in the first four goals scored, meaning the boots played center stage through their debut.

The colorway is gently faded from White on the forefoot, into a Total Orange through the heel. You also get that huge broken glass style “159” hit on the heel that separates it from the regular IX version. The breaking effect obviously plays along with the fact she broke the record. There is a further personal touch thanks to the laces, where the text “Strong and Fearless” has been printed. And in pretty typical USWNT fashion, their is a message that reaffirms the women team as being one of the united in all of sport.

Side note – make sure to follow Abby on Twitter.
I have no official confirmation on this one, but I’m assuming these boots will go into retirement or some sort of auction after last nights game. I’m sure Abby appreciates the sentiments, but her goal tally is set to continue rising at a rapid pace.
What are your thoughts on this Wambach inspired design and would you wear a pair?
