We are a US based site, and we respect everything that happens here in MLS and with the USMNT. This story concerns boots (which we like to think we specialize in) and a very important issue – so it is absolutely worth highlighting. If you know anyone interested in entering to potentially win the boots while supporting a very important charity, share the word so they know where they can purchase a ticket.
During the WC qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, against Mexico on September 10th, Jozy Altidore is set to wear a personalized pair of boots in honor of Kirk Urso, a former Columbus Crew player who passed away suddenly on Aug. 5, 2012. Altidore became friends with Urso when they played together in the U.S. Soccer Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla. His passing came as a shock to the entire US soccer community and it definitely hit home for Altidore. The boots worn will be part of a fundraiser and will help with youth heart-defect research.
I thought honoring Kirk on the field he once played on in what will probably go down as the biggest match in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying history would be a great way to remember him and generate awareness toward what caused him to be taken from us all far too soon.
One of the best parts of all this is that someone is going to win the cleats I’m wearing as part of a fundraiser set up between my foundation and the Crew Soccer Foundation’s Kirk Urso Memorial Fund. I hope soccer fans across the world will take part and help us generate more funding toward youth heart-defect research.
The cleats will be signed by Altidore following the match and feature the Urso quote, “I am strong. I can overcome,” along with the initials and numbers of each player – “KU15″ and “JA17.” The boots will be made available via a raffle, and tickets can be purchased for $15 each or four (4) tickets for $50 through Wednesday, September 11. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Jozy Altidore Foundation and the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund.
You can purchase your ticket RIGHT HERE.
*UPDATE: Jozy is actually suspended for the Mexico game due to yellow cards and the one he picked up vs Costa Rica on Friday, but the JA Foundation assured us that he will wear them in either a future USMNT game, or the EPL for Sunderland – so keep supporting!
Again, get involved and help spread the word via the above link. We will follow-up after the game with images and hopefully we can find out who was the lucky recipient of the boots!
