Ronaldo Wins Ballon d’Or, Gets Rare Gold Superfly

Special-Edition-Gold-Superfly-CR7

As the story goes, all you need to do is win the Ballon d’Or and your sponsored brand will deck you out in a special edition pair of boots befitting of a king. It is really that simple. Sadly, there is only one Ballon d’Or winner and the chances of you beating out Ronaldo, Messi and co. are pretty slim!

Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned Worlds Best Player today and in quick response, Nike introduced us to this killer pair of custom boots. The Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold was designed specifically for Ronaldo and were given to him after he was awarded his third Ballon d’Or.  Gold was selected as the main color on the boot because gold is earned. Ronaldo earned his golden award with tremendous play for club and country. As a tribute to Ronaldo’s work ethic, Nike added a special touch to the Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold. For the first time in Nike history, micro-diamonds have been applied by hand to the CR7 logo of the boot.

The micro-diamonds are remnants from larger stones that are painstakingly perfected by craftsmen. As the diamonds are refined and the details sharpened, tiny pieces are cut away, leaving micro-diamonds behind as evidence of work in progress. The commitment to keep chipping away at something already impressive reminded Nike’s design team of Ronaldo’s work ethic. While many see Ronaldo as the best in the world, he sees room for improvement.

What a release and you gotta love the story placed on it by the creative team at Nike. And you know fans are going to eat up this design, it is about as sharp as they come.

Will we get to see these boots in action? As you would expect, there is only one player going to be wearing these boots and it will be this weekend when Ronaldo puts them on during the Real Madrid vs Getafe match. For the rest of us, we will just have to watch on and enjoy catching them in action during their only on-pitch appearance.

Leaves you to wonder, what are adidas doing with the pair they had lined up to release if Messi won the award!

  1. I would prefer Messi win the award. He is to me better, even if it is only just, than Ronaldo.
