How Does Primeknit 16.1 Fit? (And Other Questions Answered)

Ace16.1 Primeknit

Just last week, adidas introduced us to another of their tech advanced boots, this one in the form of Ace 16.1 Primeknit. Featuring a higher than usual ankle collar and knit right through the upper, this second generation release is intended to offer players a completely different type of in-game performance.

As we work our way through a play test and review, I wanted to provide some initial feedback for players looking to jump on a pair right now. If you follow us on Instagram, you probably spotted our request for questions you want answered about the boots today.

Ace16.1 Primeknit Unboxing

ollie.campbell29 What are the benefits of buying this rather than the PureControl 16+ (Laceless Boot)?

This one is pretty simple – Primeknit has laces! It is all related to how you like you fit. With Primeknit you can dictate how much you tighten the boots, with PURECONTROL it is preset. Adidas has actually constructed both boots from a similar mold, so they have a lot in common outside of the lacing system.

soccer_bootz Is the upper more tight to your feet than on the 16+?

Going along the lines of the previous answer, Primeknit provides a slightly looser fit than PURECONTROL. This has a lot to do with the fact that adidas needed to produce a much more snug fit to create a laceless style design. With Primeknit, the upper is less constricted and you are left with the option of choosing how tight they fit.

eshawlee12 How do they compare with Nike “equivalent” fit collars?

The collar on Primeknit is a low-cut, whereas all of Nike’s boots feature a mid-cut. That would be the obvious visual difference. In terms of shape, Primeknit has a much more accommodating and wider opening. As a result, the material is a little looser against your ankle.

Ace16 Primeknit Upper

chachoblanco What kind of touch does the upper have? (thick vs. thin and grippy vs. clean)

It is a very textured upper, with what feels like punched perforations layering the upper. This has a two-fold purpose; improve grip on the ball and lower the weight of the upper material.

sam.t.20 Are these better for wider or thinner feet?

These are much more accommodating to a wide fit, with plenty of space up towards the forefoot. There is minimal stretch through wear due to the synthetic overlay, so the fit from first wear is what you can expect over time.

Primeknit and PURECONTROL

sttlmyrls Are they better than the 15.1?

Personally, I’d have to go with no. But that has a lot to do with the fact I prefer a regular cut boot, where my ankle can swivel and flex naturally. My recommendation is to pick up a pair of 15.1 at a cheaper price to check out what is on offer, then as soon as 16.1 goes on sale, pick up a pair!

footballbook Are they worth the price?

Is any boot really worth +$200? In my opinion, not really when there is the opportunity to get two other pairs on sale for the same price. But, you are getting a highly advanced boot that provides a type of performance not seen before on a boot.
