In recent weeks, Nike has been pushing their latest “Fire and Ice” campaign across all silos. Today, they unleashed a fresh set of Mercurial Flyknit Ultra colorways to join the party. The original special edition gold and black version electrified the market and sold out in hours. This time around, Nike is offering more choices with a bold red and cool blue version, both featuring their individual color Swoosh and chrome outsoles.
The Flyknit Ultra is the first Vapor release to feature a Flyknit upper, allowing for a more natural wrap-around fit. Adding an increased level of comfort to a speed focused release makes it even more electrifying on pitch. In order to enhance durability, NikeSkin coats the upper and each thread protecting the Flyknit in all conditions of play.
**UPDATE: Limited edition pairs now available HERE
Underfoot, things are very similar to the current Mercurial Vapor with its anatomical design that nestles your foot like a hammock and chevron-shaped studs that afford power when pushing off in every direction. Finishing off the design, Nike add an Italian flag on the heal pays homage to their Montebelluna factory, where the cleats were created.
Feedback on the initial releases was pretty consistent, with most players stating that the only way to understand the silo and how beautifully they play/fit right out of the box is to try them for yourself.
So, when are they released and how easy will it be to secure a pair? The initial roll-out sole very quickly, with the $250 price tag creating no problem for fans that wanted to add them to their collection. Our requests for a pair to review were met with strong resistance, which tells me that the number of pairs available will again be limited and they will basically sell themselves when news of the release is shared. But, since Nike hasn’t shared a limited edition number I’d imagine there will be a larger quantity available in these two colorways.
In terms of timing, Nike and soccer.com both shared Friday, November 24th as the release date. Given this is Black Friday, it is a very unusual date for them to be introduced. We will update the very minute we hear they are available!
