In an effort to add more diversity to the site, I picked up a pair of Nike Tiempo Flight a few weeks back for testing. The Flight offers players a 3rd option in the Tiempo range, behind the Elite and Legend releases. In a sense, they are seen as a more economical version for players who want the Tiempo look at a modest price. What I have discovered in the past few weeks is that these boots offer far than than I could have expected, and they make for a fantastic in-game boot! The pair in question comes in a refined Metallic Summit White/Metallic Gold Grain/Volt colorway and I tested a size 9US. After several games, here is how they worked out.

Breaking-In
After testing, I am adding these boots to the list of must haves when it comes to comfort, with the break-in period taking no more than one wear. Out for the box, there is a high level of flexibility right throughout the Flight. The soleplate has a comfortable break right under the big-toe ball socket. This is something that actually sets the Flight apart from the Elite version – in a positive way! I found the carbon fiber soleplate on the Tiempo Elite version to be tough to break-in, leading to the conclusion that sometimes less is actually better! A suede lining is used inside the boot and ensures your foot is kept snugly in place through wear. I wore these boots in 1 training session, right out of the box, before taking them into a game without any problems.

Performance
There is nothing spectacular about the performance of the Tiempo Flight – they are simply a steady boot that, in the words of a Sure, “won’t let you down”!! The upper is soft and gives a pretty solid level of touch on the ball. I am a fan of the stitching used on the entire Tiempo range, as it creates comfortable padding without being overly pronounced. I mentioned the soleplate above, but again it is a highlight of the boot with its simple construction and generalized stud configuration allowing players to play long games without worrying about any common problems.

Compared to the Legend
Other than the difference in price (around $55) the primary difference lies in the upper, with the Flight featuring a calfskin leather upper compared to a K-leather on the Tiempo Legend. The calfskin still feels extremely supple and it offers great touch, but you do lose out on some of the durability properties found in the Legend. In terms of visuals, it is pretty tough to tell both boots apart! The obvious difference lies in the heel, where Tiempo Flight is displayed and a heel counter is missing. Both versions are offered in the same colorways. On release, if you had given me an option between both boots, I would immediately selected the Legend. But having now tested both, there is much food for thought on simply picking up a pair of Flights and saving some extra money!

Negatives
On this colorway, the upper is naturally a little tougher to keep clean. But other than that there is not a lot of negatives to find out! For players who want technology, this boot is not for you – there is an air of simplicity about the whole package and there is nothing that explicitly separates them from other releases on the market.

The Skinny Summary
Highlight: A subtle and refined looking boot that provides consistent performance and a comfortable fit through wear, at a fantastic price point! Excellent value for money.
Category: 2nd level Heritage behind the Legend.
Weight: A very competitive 9.0oz, which is actually 0.6oz lighter than the Legends!
Would I Buy Them: Absolutely! Having tested them, these boots stand as one of the best value for money options on the market in my opinion.
Player Position: The Flight is a boot suited to most player types and positions, but ultimately I feel like defenders and center mids will benefit most from the simple boot design and soft leather upper. A fantastic option for players on a budget!

Mizuno are a brand that continue to tease the taste buds of soccer players in the US with their range of consistent performing boots proving difficult to buy here! If there is an opportunity that the Japanese giant will enter the market, the Supersonic Wave 2 will certainly be a top seller! Built to fit the heritage mold, the Supersonic Wave features a K-leather upper with some seriously unusual paneled stitching and Feather Touch System. I managed to grab a pair of size 9US a few weeks back and have had them in testing since.

Although they are not available directly in the US, check the eBay Mizuno listings if you are looking for a pair – they vary in price from $150 to $200.

Breaking In
When you first get your hands on these, they exude pure confidence; the upper feels supple, the soleplate offers plenty of flexibility and they look like a formula one racing car. So, naturally there is an air of excitement as you wear them for the first time. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed through an initial jogging session and they felt comfortable. This continued as I wore them in the first game and through testing. The soleplate is flexible and the upper molds very easily. One aspect of the boot I like is the tongue, which Mizuno keep relatively thin. But on the underneath, they have a soft layer of sponge that offers enough protection without feeling overly dramatic on your foot. There is nothing overly impressive about the Supersonic Wave in terms of comfort, but they work as intended.

Heritage Release
There are a lot of great heritage release on the market and it is actually a pretty tough category to break into. But, these boots easily fit in the top 5. Everything about them has a classic look and appeal, plus you get the addition of FTS (feather touch system) on the side of the boot.

Performance
The one aspect of these boots that really seems to capture attention is the FTS, or feather touch system, that sits on the side of the boot. It is designed to give you a closer control as you dribble on the ball. You will notice that the stitching is angled in a very unusual fashion, with a PU design printed through the panels. This gives the upper an extra level of cushioning that combines with the slightly grippy PU to produce closer ball control. Its positioning makes complete sense and I am all for its inclusion, but during wear I never felt like it was that noticeable. You also have to factor in what part of the foot you use while dribbling at speed – I know some players use a more centered touch.

Mizuno has modified its stud design, with each conical stud featuring “wings” on either side. I found that this caused the boots to stick at times on turf surfaces, as more surface area means more drag. On natural surfaces, they produce just the right amount of grip and it wasn’t an issue. The studs are also created using dual density technology, so they are definitely designed to be an option for players on artificial and natural surfaces.

How Does it Fit?
In a very similar fashion as the initial Supersonic Wave release, these fit true to size. There is not a great deal of room through the midfoot, so they are not a great option from players needing a wide fit. The angle at which the upper and soleplate connect around the toes is pretty acute, meaning the upper has a very snug fit over your foot.

Negatives
The only real negative surrounds the particular colorway employed on this version. I found that they start to look old very quickly, and having a white upper means you need to clean them after each use. Another point to keep in mind is that the stud configuration can be kind of tricky on turf surfaces. I didn’t encounter too many problems, but I have received feedback about it. Basically, the shape of the studs seem to drag through wear, causing them to stick in the surface sometimes. If you have tested these, make sure to leave your feedback below for others on this.

The Skinny Summary
Highlight: Out of the box, they will make your jaw drop! Designed for touch, with angled stitching and a PU feather touch system placed along the resulting paneling. A definite top 5 heritage releases.
Category: Heritage all around. The look and feel like a classic boot, but they feature a very modern upper that gives them their own unique flavor.
Weight: A very tidy 8.6oz, which leaves them sitting below the average for heritage releases.
Would I Buy Them: If they were available on the US market, yes – but with the current range of high performing heritage boots currently on the market, I don’t see them as a must have. International shipping can be expensive!
Player Position: They are pretty generic to the market, so they offer value to all players on the field from goalkeepers to pacey strikers.

Even though they don’t compete with the top ranges on the market, lotto continue to produce top class releases that offer optimal performance to professional players. You only need to look at Italy’s Serie A and the number of players wearing Lotto there as an example of their appeal. This latest release, the Lotto Fuerzapura II, falls into the Power category while offering a solid mix of technology, lightness and precision. I picked up a pair of size 9US in the offbeat White/Cyber Yellow/Black colorway for testing.

Breaking In
Similar to the review of the original Fuerzapura, I didn’t experience too many problems with these. You will need to spend some time allowing them to loosen up and mold effectively. One of the key components of Lotto’s success in comfort is the PuntoFlex technology they have mastered. Puntoflex has been one of the constants in Lotto releases over the years, and it is something you can easily feel by flexing the front of the soleplate. I found that the soleplate as a whole is slightly stiff for the first few training sessions, but that is related to the technology included.

The upper consists of a K-leather with the the synthetic Cyber Yellow panels acting to support the midfoot. Transitioning to a K-leather upper is a great move, in my opinion, but the side panels are a little tricky. The concept is that they envelope your foot and allow for a more compact fit, but I found this to cause too much pressure on the arch. It eventually subsided over time but was a concern through the first few wears. If you notice the same thing make sure to give them time as it should improve as you break them in.

Lotto Technology
There is a bag load of technology on this release (as well as most other current Lotto releases). The sole features Twist’nGo, PuntoFlex and ReactiveArch while you also get a Reactive Insole. To save some time, here is the Lotto terminology for each feature:

Twist’nGo is the first pivoting stud to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Puntoflex is a special technical device in the soleplate which allows the foot to flex correctly and gives an excellent elastic return.

ReactiveArch is a new sole that flexes and moves in unison with the natural deformation movement of the transversal arch in the forefoot. It favors the subsequent elastic return (energy return) of the forefoot.

ReactiveInsole offers an exceptional return memory and flexion channels for perfect synergy with the ReactiveArch technology. The ridges positioned on the upper part of the insole provide arch massage which aids circulation and the absorption of lactic acid.

Does Twist’nGo Work?
The most common question I get with Lotto boots surrounds the use of Twist’nGo technology – or the stud that turns at the top of the boot. The concept is that the stud has the ability to spin as it penetrates the surface, which makes sense and there doesn’t seem to be any negatives to its inclusion. In reality, it is tough to tell how effective it is in game and for the most part your turning action will involve both front studs – I don’t normally do ballerina turns!

In Game Performance
For their intended purpose, there is not too much to complain about on the Fuerzapura II. At 10oz, you would expect some lag behind these, but because of two contributing components, they feel like a lightweight boot! First is the configuration of the studs, which has been altered with a tiered step design on each producing a shape that is designed to penetrate the surface with more efficiency. It makes it easy to hit the surface and rebound up with less drag. Secondly, the side paneling is designed to support your foot and this produces a very snug encompassing fit. At their weight point, they are also considered to be a power boot – but there is no added power elements. Ultimately, this actually plays in the favor of the boot! I found them to be particularly effective when I played as a forward, it was probably mostly psychological but the feel and fit gives the feel they add some extra wallop behind shots!

Synthetic to leather Upper
The initial Fuerzapura release featured a synthetic upper – so the fact that Lotto has switched this design to a K-leather is bold, but very much appreciated! The fact they have managed to drop the weight by 0.8oz in the process adds even more appeal to the boot!

Design
The most unique aspect of this release is obviously the addition of a synthetic panel that acts as additional support through the midfoot. On this version, the Cyber Yellow looks slightly out of place and awkward. Reaction to the release has not been overly positive, although it does offer a completely different look to other boots on the market. I like the concept, and with the right colorway these could look extremely sweet!

How Do They Fit?
Length wise they are very much a true to size boot. In terms of width, I found that as you move from midfoot to forefoot, the boot gradually transitions from a medium to wide fit. The inclusion of the midfoot panels creates a slightly tighter fit – plus everything about them is designed to offer a high level of arch support.

Negatives
To be honest, there might almost be too much technology used in the soleplate – in a sense it makes them seem a little confusing and if you are encountering any discomfort it could be related to several different things! More colorway options are also a necessity!

The Skinny Summary
Highlight: A very solid performing power boot that features a lot of technology through the soleplate
Category: Power – there is no additional power technology, but the design and concept of the boot surrounds the ideals of players who want strength in their boots!
Weight: A 10oz power boot sounds about right – a good number for them to be at.
Would I Buy Them: If they were the right colorway, and were available around the $100 mark (they retail for $180) I would put them into consideration for days when I know I will be playing up front.
Player Position: Definitely an ideal choice for any defender or center mid. They offer solid protection and comfort throughout. Forwards who want a run-of-the-mill boot that will provide an extra element of power for shooting should also add them to the list.

The latest power boot to hit the market comes in the form of the creative Puma PowerCat 1.12, or PWR-CT 1.12. The PowerCat line has dramatically changed through its existence and this edition offers a very unique final package. Right after release, the response from players was extremely popular, with the boots design being one of the most positive aspects. And then there was the fact that Cesc Fabregas made the surprising decision to jump ship from the Nike CTR360 Maestri to the PowerCat! For testing, I wore a pair of size 9US in the very fresh and bright White Pearl/PUMA Royal/Team Gold colorway and for the first time, I am including a short video to accompany the review – located at the bottom of this page.

Breaking In
To be honest, I didn’t find these to be the easiest boot in the world to break-in. The soleplate does eventually produce a really nice fit, but starting out they were a little stiff. I wore them for 2 training sessions before trying them in a game and this proved effective. The upper easily molds to your feet and feels great on the ball, K-leather again seems to be the winning formula! I was hesitant about how the Power Shooting Zone would feel through first wear, but it didn’t cause any problems. Matched with strategically positioned stitching across the front of the strike zone, it moves pretty much in unison with your foot. Because they are a little above the average weight of boots currently released (10.4oz) you get plenty of padding, particularly through the heel, which is nice.

3D Power Shooting Technology
Along the strike zone, you will find Puma’s newly innovated SD PST, or Power Shooting Technology. It is comprised of two separate regions of TPU, both featuring different densities and serving opposite functions. The blue region is a soft TPU that is positioned to retract and allow the ball to cushion against your foot, aiding in first touch and control. The Gold bars are a more solid TPU that offer more rebound as the ball contacts the region, particularly as you strike shots.

Does It Work?
The concept definitely does – but in reality it is tough to tell exactly how much of an impact it has on your game. The key question I have received is “Do the two regions counteract each other?” Puma has placed each piece of technology pretty effectively and with its own purpose on the boot. The blue touch/control TPU sits right across the region where you should be controlling the ball as you dribble and it is angled slightly down to ensure it doesn’t conflict with the gold power/rebound TPU. Plus, the Gold TPU sits right where you should be contacting the ball on solid shots. Of both pieces, I found the Gold TPU to be more effective and useful. You definitely get more pop out of shots and there is a nice rebound effect that will be particularly useful to players who prefer power over placement. I also tested to see if it offered any benefits in terms of putting more swerve on shots – this proved inconclusive.

Everything Else Performance
In terms of traction, Puma again stick with a similar blade configuration that is pretty effective. The blades are long enough to offer excellent twist and turn on firm ground while also working efficiently for the most part on turf. The only time I did question them as while playing in wet conditions on turf, they gave out once or twice as I tried to accelerate.

Something I really like is the tongue design. Puma allow it to be very breathable and have placed a slit on the top, so it forms and hugs your ankle comfortable.

Design
Initial feedback after release was centered on how good the boots looked! Puma put together an excellent combo of colors - White Pearl/PUMA Royal/Team Gold – that has really grasped the attention of fans. Personally, I feel like the gold detailing has a lot to do with it, as it adds a more sophisticated look. Plus, the 3D PST region gives the boot a curious look, and it makes you want to know more about the boot. Since they are white, you need to consider the fact they will need regular care. There are darker colorways coming soon.

How Do They Fit?
The one company I regularly encounter sizing issues with is Puma – but they seem to have got these spot on! Length wise, they are absolutely true to size and make for a perfect fit. If you are a player looking for a wider fit, these make for a solid option. From the midfoot, right through the forefoot, you get plenty of room and nice stretch to ensure your foot is not cramped.

Negatives
The biggest problem was scuffing that occurred around along the front of the boot. This is related to using them on turf and the white colorway is also a factor. Check out the video below for more details. It is definitely something to take into consideration if you are looking for a long term option.

The Skinny Summary
Highlight: Stealing Cesc Fabregas from Nike before releasing this boot was a very smart business move from Puma, and I am sure it won over a lot of new fans without them knowing how the boots test.
Category: In actuality, they are a solid power boot with some neat technology, the 3D PST Zone. Designed to offer both better touch and additions power, you are getting a hybrid of sorts.
Weight: They come in at 10.4oz, which is slightly above average although ideal for a power boot. It is noticeable if you are familiar to wearing some of the lightweight boots currently on the market.
Would I Buy Them: If you are looking for something new that looks really fashionable, they are a good option and I would probably fork out on a pair for that reason – but considering durability, they are not the best value for money currently on the market – retail around $180.
Player Position: Cesc is a playmaker, so add that to the list – but I think center-backs and strikers will benefit most. As a winger, I enjoyed them but there are better options (like the V1.11 SL!)

ASICS are a company that are relatively new to the US market, with only a few boots released for players to choose from. But, what they have done well is create boots to match the expectations of top players! One of those boots is the Lethal Stats, a boot that incorporates Asics HG10MM heel technology and a mixed k-leather/synthetic upper. It makes for an interesting release, and since Asics are a company with a positive reputation for creating top-line running shoes, they need to be taken seriously. For testing, I wore a size 9US in the Black/Wattle colorway.

HG10MM® technology
It is actually important to start this review by detailing the raised heel gradient, so that you understand my comments in several sections below. In the heel of the soleplate, Asics has raised the boot by 10mm. The idea is that it reduces the angle at which your body impacts the ground, reducing stress on joints and avoiding over stretching muscles right through the leg. You also start at a very different position, almost in a sprinters pose, and this creates an opportunity to increase acceleration from the right take-off position. Through its advertising campaign, Asics focus on the fact that footwear has been stagnant for the past 30 years, and this technology revolutionizes the boot.

How Does It Feel?
In similar fashion to the Lethal Tigreor review, the raised heel is extremely unique and according to Asics ultimately does have its benefits – but you are going to need time to really adjust to what it offers. They felt slightly clumsy for the first few wears and there is a window of re-training that you need to go through. Your standing position is very different and causes you to position yourself slightly more forward than in a regular pair of boots. Even though it is only 10mm, you will notice a substantial difference toward a regular flat boot. All-in-all, I wore them in three training sessions before I even thought about taking them into a game. One area I encountered issues was actually striking the ball, as you end up connecting at a different angle, sometimes a little too far over the ball.

Having said all that, I am very impressed with what Asics are taking on, even if it is a controversial area. If you are up for the challenge of a new type of technology they are worth trying – just note that even after testing, I can’t back-up any of Asics claims about them improving pressure on joints etc. It doesn’t cause any discomfort, but does produce a longer break-in period as you transition.

Breaking-In
Once you conquer the heel gradient, there is a lot of positives about the Lethal Stats. You are definitely getting a comfortable boot from first wear and their is no shortage of soft padding. The entire boot feels like a giant marshmallow on your feet. When you consider they weight in at 9.4oz and offer good touch, that marshmallow feel on the inside can only be a good thing!

The region I like most is around the ankle, where the padding sits comfortably against the foot and produces a confident fit. The suede lining through the heel is also another area I like, as it has a slightly rubber feel that grips your ankle, ensuring it really doesn’t move through wear. Asics include their own unique insole that is soft around the toe areas, while providing a firm feel from the midsole down through the heel.

In-Game Performance
The upper on the Lethal Stats is composed of a K-leather through the strike zone, and a synthetic leather called RhynoSkin encompassing the rest of the boot. RhynoSkin mimics the feel of real leather, but holds much better durability. It definitely doesn’t have any visual similarities to real leather and I did find it to be slightly stiff through the first few wears. The benefit of its inclusion is more support through the upper.

What differentiates these boots from the rest of Asics range is the stud configuration, which is designed for top-line traction. On the heel you get 5 conical studs, while there are a total of 13 strategically positioned, and very different studs placed through the front of the boot. It definitely makes them a very suitable option for the “Best Grip of the Year” as I found out through wear! When it comes to turf surfaces, they might actually stick a little too much and it takes time to adjust to it as you twist. But those of you who need or are looking for plenty of stability, they are a great option.

Design
You get a pretty basic Asics look that has many similarities to most other boots in their line-up. The Black/Wattle colorway I tested offers a very professional look that will suit the no-nonsense type player, or anyone that wants to just get on with playing their game. Another option for players who need something a little brighter is the White/Black/Wattle colorway.

How Do They Fit?
Very much true to size and on par with most other boots on the market. They also offer a decently wide feet through the midfoot, giving you plenty of room for a comfortable fit.

Negatives
The biggest negative is obviously the adjustment period to start, and to be honest I can’t see the technology working for all players. If you need a boot that works right now, these are not the right choice for you. It is very difficult to give any other negatives about a boot that offers great comfort and performance at a very affordable price range but if you are the type of player who holds visuals at a high level, the Lethal Stats holds a slightly tacky look and they don’t quiet seem like a top-line release.

Summary
To be honest, there are quiet a lot of similarities between the Lethal Stats and Lethal Tigreor and I would advise players who are on a tighter budget to stick to the Stats. For those looking to simply find a quality boot the differences between both leaves the Tigreor as the better release! I am impressed with the quality of boot produced by Asics and there is definitely room for them in the market. Players who want a durable and very well protected boot should definitely consider taking a look at what these boots offer – there are not many better value for money options out there. For around $110, they are a bargain! In terms of player position, these fit the hybrid mold and will be useful for all types of player on the field.

Without a doubt, there is not a more advanced boot on the market than the Adidas F50 adiZero with miCoach! There are two parts to this that make it work: the boots and the SPEED_CELL chip. Adidas has worked on improving the overall performance of F50, while creating a cavity in the sole where the chip is housed. Having the opportunity to track your own personal workout data through play allows you to find areas where your game can be improved! Over the past few weeks, I have been testing a pair in the High Energy/Electricity/White colorway along with the SPEED_CELL for Mac/PC. I went with the leather upper in a size 9US.

Breaking In
As with all the F50 adiZero boots I have tested, breaking in was a relatively easy experience. It is one area that Adidas has really perfected. Right out of the box, the upper and soleplate offer enough flexibility to give you comfort right through first wear. I ended up wearing my pair for a light jogging session starting out, primarily to see if the miCoach cavity produced any difference in how they feel. Because of how the sprint frame soleplate is constructed, you will not even notice it is there. I must admit that it was a concern before testing, but I am happy to report it doesn’t affect comfort in anyway. A HUGE positive – Adidas has stuck with including a cushioned insole only rather than trying to persuade players that they need an optional lightweight insole. Trust me when I say there are no benefits to using a thin insole and this new insole offers a perfect balance that will keep your feet smiling through long games!

Leather Upper
Through experience with the F50 adiZero range, I have found that the leather version offers more positives through wear than the Synthetics – particularly when it comes to feel on the ball as you dribble. On this latest release, Adidas has trimmed down the area covered by the Galeo full-grain leather. Instead of covering the entire forefoot through midfoot, it now stops just along the strike zone. Personally, I just love the feeling as the ball connects with the leather upper, you can actually feel the ball cushion as it impacts your foot!

SPEED_CELL
I am going to highlight the functionality of the Adidas miCoach website in a future post, but the basics are as follows. Adidas are ahead of the bunch with the technology used in this boot. The chip does a good job of capturing your data through play and the benefits of seeing how you performed can help you improve your game. It sits very comfortably in the cavity of the boot and you will have no idea it is there through wear. But, Adidas still has work to do if they want to be the leader in performance tracking. It probably has a lot to do with “teething issues” but I found there is little data to help you out if you encounter any problems and I encountered plenty of problems! On emailing the Adidas team, it took over a week to get a reply and I suspect many of you will encounter the same issue as I did (“the CONNECT driver was not installed properly”)

Performance
When it comes down to it, I love the concept of being able to review data on how I played through a 90 minute game and this leaves these boots miles ahead of anything else on the market. The boot itself manages to live up to expectations, offering players a comfortable and very functional package. Adidas has slightly altered the stud configuration, resulting in better traction in game, and finally a complete resolution to the breaking stud issue seen on the initial release. I wore them several times on artificial surfaces without any problems, while they are a natural fit for grass pitches. Weight wise, they come in around 6.1oz, but take out the miCoach chip and they drop to a fantastically light 6.0oz!

Design
Lets not beat around the bush here – these boots are in no way the best looking you will find on the market. How Adidas came up with a McDonald’s High Energy/Electricity colorway is beyond me but it is not flattering. In saying that, I have found they are better looking in person than images online, and I have had a lot of fellow players comment on how vibrant they look in play. What it comes down to is your taste and what it is you are looking for visually in a boot!

How do they fit?
There is continually conflicting data on how the F50 adizero fits, with some players deeming them to be a half size long, while others find they are true to size. In my opinion, the leather version fits ever so slightly longer than true to size. If you are a natural size 9 (like me) and order a size 9, you will a little extra room toward the top of the boot – but definitely not enough to go down a half size. If you like a super snug fit, you are welcome to order down a half size knowing the leather will give a little – but if I was ordering them again it would be true to size!

Negatives
I have given you my thoughts on design and the SPEED_CELL, but there is one negative I have about the boot. Over the past week I have noticed some separation between the upper and soleplate. It is probably related to using them on artificial turf, but it is still a concern. As I wear the boots more, I will give further updates.

What you need to buy:
You have choices here starting with the boot itself – you can go for a leather or a synthetic upper. In terms of the miCoach SPEED_CELL, you can choose between one that functions with PC/Mac or iPhone/iPod. You can buy them individually, or some sites sell both together as a package (like soccer.com for example).

Summary
There is a lot of oomph behind this release and I applaud Adidas for taking the much needed leap into player performance tracking. It is a bold step that can only help players in their quest to improve what they do on the pitch, whether it be a 90 minute game or a training session. Adidas has not deviated too much from the original adiZero release, so you know that they are confident in the finished article. There are some areas where I have concerns, but all-in-all I would still recommend them as an top purchase. In terms of position, every player on the field can benefit from these boots. My only concern would lie with hard-hitting defenders who might want something with a little more sustenance and protection. If design is an issue for you, watch out for new colorways in the coming months!

Over the past few weeks, we have seen a huge wave of publicity surrounding the release of the new and highly advanced Pele Sports Trinity. These boots are extremely unique, with Pele Sports gambling on the addition of new forms of technology to capture the attention of the market. It is the three stud heel design that has people talking, with many wondering what type of traction you can expect while wearing them. I initially tested a prototype pair, but finalized my review over the past week with the Black/Neon retail version in a size 9US.

Finding the Right Size
The first important aspect to consider in order to make the most of the Trinity is sizing. I wear a size 9US and tested a size 9US – they fit a half size long. Ultimately, an 8.5US would offer a much more snug fit. If you are going to buy a pair I strongly consider going down a half size. For players looking for a wide fit, these are a solid option, with the midfoot through forefoot allowing for adequate room.

Breaking In
You are not going to encounter any problems breaking in the Trinity. Everything about them is designed to give you good feel in the first few wears; it is one of the highlights of the boot. The Symbioskin upper (read about it below) is soft and molds very effectively to your fit. The soleplate also offers plenty of flexibility so you won’t need to worry about spending a great deal of time working it in. I started out wearing my pair for a short jogging session, but knew they were pretty much game ready – so I wore them the following weekend for 90 minutes without any problems.

Symbioskin Upper
A synthetic upper called Symbioskin is used on the Trinity. It has been specifically developed just for this boot and is basically a low density, tri-laminate material. Because the material is so thin, you get great feel on the ball. This makes them ideal for quick players who like to look up and survey space in front of them. Something that is unique about the upper is the laminate grooves right throughout. There are 3 systems within this that allow the boots to really envelop your foot. The real benefit behind this, in my opinion, is that you get a fit that has room to stretch out as you put your foot in. This also offers medium players the opportunity to wear them in a similar fashion to what a wide foot player would. Pele Sports are also releasing a narrow and wide version of the boot to cater for different players!

Another positive about the upper is that it is not rigid, something that we have seen in uppers of other lightweight boots – like the Superfly for example. This means you are getting a far more responsive material, aiding your control.

Extreme Speed Boot
At a mere 5.6oz, these boots are designed for out and out speed, matching some of the lightest boots on the market. One concern this raises is that of durability, but thanks to Pele Sports collaboration with Formula One engineers to formulate a solid boot that offers long lasting wear. Having wore them 6-7 times at this stage, I have to admit that they still look pretty brand new. The Symbioskin upper is extremely durable and doesn’t scuff/mark easily. The soleplate is really scientific, with a dual density polymer created through molecular manipulation, resulting in optimized rigidity directly aligned to the overall bio-mechanics of the foot. Basically, it is slightly rigid to start but extremely light and durable through wear.

Innovative Stud Configuration
It is not difficult to spot the differences between the soleplate on the Trinity compared to any other boot on the market! Five blades on the front and 3 on the back make for one of the most unusual configurations you will ever see. On first impression, it seems very daunting and I have to admit that I was nervous testing them out for the first time. The idea of playing with 3 misaligned studs at the back goes against the norm, you grow up expecting at least 2-4 parallel studs to keep you stable in play. Pele Sports claim that “The extreme position of the rear tripod studs trigger earlier ground contact and stability with high velocity release and the forefoot studs permit excellent traction and explosive acceleration.”

The big question, how do they test? Without over exaggerating, there is something about this configuration that actually makes you feel more stable on your feet! I was under the impression that the boot would easily wobble from side to side, but this is absolutely not the case! There is no rolling or movement whatsoever. I have had the opportunity to test them out on both grass and turf surfaces, with positive results on both. The boots hold firm without sticking, giving you the ability to accelerate and stride when needed, and also take quick steps when getting out of tight spaces.

They remind me of…
Several players have brought up the fact that these boots remind them of the older Mercurial ranges. I have to agree that they do and this could be one of the most smartest moves seen on the market in recent years! Players loved the old school Nike range and because they are not available anymore, why not replace them!! So, if you are looking for an alternative….meet the Trinity!

Negatives
Sizing is obviously a negative. The boot fits longer than your regular release, which will result in players needing to swap for a new pair. My advice is to order a half size down. I also had some problems with toe-off action. Basically, the tip of the soleplate is slick with groves that go down to the toe. There is nothing in the region to grip the surface as you turn sharply and accelerate off. It is really only an issue when your knee is positioned closer to the ground, visualize the motion of pushing off with your foot fully flexed.

Summary
This is an exciting release from Pele Sports and it really ups their value in the market. For those that decide to pick up a pair, you won’t be disappointed as you are getting a very tidy package that offers something you won’t find elsewhere. But, moving away from the norm can be challenging at times and a retail price of $200 might be hefty for some. You need to weigh up exactly what the boot has to offer and factor that in with what you are getting. I am fascinated with Pele Sports decision to push boundaries and unleash a three stud design. Add to that you are getting a durable upper that is going to last right through your season (plus more if you really take care of them!) and there is a lot to consider here. In terms of player position, I can see fast forwards and wingers benefiting most. They are a match for many other positions on the field, but this category of player will find them most effective.

One of the biggest challenges any company faces is finding a persuasive way to categorize a specific boot to a mass audience – but it seems like Umbro has got it right with this release! The Umbro Geometra Pro is a boot designed to tackle the Control/Playmaker category, with plenty of technology added to a fully functional K-leather upper. This is the first Umbro release since Nike took over the company, and you can tell that there a new thought process involved in this release. It took a while, but I finally received a pair for testing, in the Silver/Black/Yellow colorway, and have spent the past few weeks putting them through their paces!

Breaking In
One thing that Umbro has done well is create a very easy to wear boot! Out of the box, they offer a comfortable fit right through the upper, and the soleplate offers a flexible feel immediately after you put them on. I spent one training session loosening up the stitching before taking them into a game. I was a little concerned initially that they would be too loose and they do fit slightly longer than true to size. But with soccer socks on and the fact that the upper is designed to sit close to the top of your foot, they almost mold down onto your feet. The leather is super soft and the strategically positioned stitching allows it to move and mimic your foot shape very quickly – always a bonus!

Improving Ball Control
The one area of this boot I love most is the ECZ, or Energy Control Zone. This is the padded region that sits along the instep and it makes for a fantastic addition, particularly when you go to take long passes out of the air. In fact, it is the best piece of technology I have seen added along that region of any boot on the market! The concept of padding the region makes complete sense, and Umbro employ a Teijin medial pad with memory foam to do so.

Right along the front of the boot there is a silicon-bonded grip zone that almost feels like a soft suede. It sits on top of the K-Leather and right along the strike zone, as seen in the image below. I don’t see its addition improving power, but it does add some extra grip and better touch, helping to improve control. It is especially effective when you are playing in wet conditions, as the region almost feels a little rougher. Another good addition that improves the appeal of the boot.

Performance
Both the addition of an ECZ and a silicon-bonded grip zone compliment what these boots are – a control boot. But that is not all they have and there are other factors that make the package more impressive. The strategically positioned stitching featured along the K-Leather upper improves how the boot syncs up with your feet. Right through wear, they seem to mimic your movements and this immediately improves performance. Another area where they excel is in traction. I found that through wear they offer a solid level of grip no matter what the surface! The shape and design of the blades are very effective and having worn them on turf and natural grass, I give them the thumbs up. Also, sitting right under the joint of your big toe is a circular bladed region. As you swivel and turn, it gives you great stability and is very useful when you are looking to accelerate quickly in another direction.

Design
I like the design’s Umbro have created with this release, although it doesn’t match the best looks seen on the market. You get plenty of colorway options, some of which look better than others. I wasn’t overly excited by the Silver/Black/Yellow colorway I tested, but they offer a unique look and an interesting combo of colors. There is plenty of detailing through the boot and the signature “Umbro” sits very impressively along the heel. My preferred release in the range comes in a pretty simple yet sleek White/Black/High Risk Red colorway.

How do they fit?
Starting out, I was a little concerned that they were going to be a half size too big, but thankfully that did not turn out to be the case. You get a pretty wide fit toward the front of the boot with the shape offering a more rounded look. Compared to other boots, I found there was some extra space on the outside of the boot, around your little toe. Overall, players with a slim fit will probably need to consider ordering down a half size, especially if you find that you have a little extra space in your current boot. I am normally a straight up size 9 – I would categorize these as a 9.25!

Negatives
There are a few areas where Umbro can make improvements to this boot. Size is the first area – I don’t quite think the sizing is right, especially up around the toe region. They seem to be a little “rounded” and all though this might suit some players, I can see it being a negative for most. Something else that concerns me is durability. There are plenty of seams through the upper and I did notice that the upper-to-soleplate joining was loosening up in several areas. It is something to watch! Another suggestion is in the weight of the boot. Coming in at 10.2oz, they suit the control mode and are not at all a heavy boot. In fact, 3 years ago they would have been a light boot! But, companies seem to be striving to break the 10oz mark and doing so would only increase the appeal of the boot.

Summary
It is my opinion that this release could be the boot to change the direction of Umbro soccer footwear – in a very positive way! The design matched with some excellent technology has elevated what I expect from the brand. The only issue is getting players to try these boots, but players that do will not be disappointing and will probably take a liking to Umbro. The most impressive aspect for me was the addition of the control region along the instep as it really helps to cushion balls that you take out of the air. They seem to match the expectations of both playmakers and defensive midfielders who strive to take control of center midfield. You get great control and touch on the ball thanks to the ECZ and the grip zone, while the traction offered matches the best boots on the market! Overall, I would have to rate this as one of the best releases we have seen from Umbro in a while!

When it comes to leather uppers, I am personally a fan of the touch and control benefits that are offered. That is why, having already tested the synthetic version of the Puma V1.11, I took the opportunity to pick up a pair in the k-leather upper for review. At 8.4oz, the boot is designed to be a speed boot and the shape of the upper around the toes fulfills the requirements of the V series! For testing, I wore the Fluo Green/Midnight Navy/White colorway in a size 9.5US.

You will find that some of this review is similar to the Puma V1.11 synthetic review, specifically in areas where the boots are extremely similar.

Important: Getting the right size!
If you are not familiar with Puma shoes, they generally fit tight – my recommendation for the k-leather version is very similar to the synthetic version, order up a half size. You will get some stretch from the K-leather upper, but the reason that I recommend a half size up is related to the shape of the boot, with the toe region offering a flat rather than round fit. For those of you who know their size in previous V series releases, these fit very similarly, with some additional width at the top of the boot.

Breaking In
Ensuring I had the right size from first wear resulted in a smooth break in period with these boots. My experience was again very similar, with the soleplate starting out a little stiff. But, after a training session they quickly got into the swing of things! The front of the boot has that strange “V” angle design we have become familiar with on the V series. I refer to it as a box toe because of its sharp angle appearance. It is an odd comment, but if you have a toe that is longer than your big toe, you will probably want to avoid these! I ended wearing them in several training sessions before the first game.

Leather Upper
There is just something about leather that immediately increases the appeal of a boot for me. There are some players that prefer synthetic, but I just feel that leather has more to offer in terms of touch. And falling right in-line, the addition of K-Leather to the V1.11 makes for an even better boot! Not only does the leather feel soft, but the stitching ensures it contours with the shape of your foot as you connect with the ball, producing a glove like fit. It could also be argued that the Puma cat looks much happier in leather!

Performance
When it came to game time, the V1.11 perform at a competitive level. The lightweight nature of the boot suited my game and I found them to be an effective tool in terms of acceleration. Crossing felt ok, it is one area they fall slightly short. Along the front of the boot, stitching is applied to ensure you are getting a durable boot, but this causes the material to rise slightly. Getting under the ball on a pitch with little grass might cause issues. On grass, they worked out well and I felt like they were more suited. The leather upper give you an extra supple touch. I found that as the ball contacts your foot, the leather molds to your foot and allows for more cushioning. I also found that while wet, the leather gives a grippier feel on the ball.

Something I didn’t mention on the synthetic review that I did notice with these was problematic traction. I played several games at night when there was mist on the field, and I have to admit that on several occasions I lost my footing. This was particularly true while dribbling and trying to stop quickly. It wasn’t a consistent problem, but be warned that there might be times when they fail to offer exactly what you need!

Negatives
The negatives I have with the V1.11 are primarily centered around size. There were definitely moments when I thought I needed a full size up rather than the additional half size I wore. Another negative was that of traction, and I was a little disappointed when I lost my footing on several occasions. The Puma blades are generally designed with more angled dimensions than regular cleats, something that is worth taking into consideration. Other than that

Summary
With each new release in a series, companies look to go bigger and better – Puma have achieved that with this release. It is the simple things such as the addition of a fully functional lace cover, and the redesigned front strike zone that features a more textured effect. I definitely don’t think the Puma V1.11 are suited for all players and I have no doubt that people will buy them only to discover the shape and fit causes them problems on the field. But those players who find them to be effective will experience a fantastic match and a high performer. If I had to choose between the leather and synthetic version, my vote definitely goes to the Leather. The soft upper just adds another level, with a better touch and feel as you move with the ball at your feet. The weight difference between both versions is 0.2oz – something only a prima dona would complain about! (Don’t be that guy) If you are looking for a different colorway, Puma also has a White/Black/Dresden Blue colorway in K-Leather available.

Up until this point, I haven’t tested any of their silos, so I worked quickly to get my hands on a pair of their most prolific boots – the Asics Lethal Tigreor. In a similar fashion to their running shoes, finding a way to improve player performance seems to be a key focus for Asics. The inclusion of a 10mm raised heel on this release produces a completely unique fit and feel that will require adjusting from regular boots. There are also several other key areas that need to be cover, all of which are new to the market. You might find this review to be a little meatier than usual! For testing, I wore the Pearl White/Navy colorway in a size 9US.

The image above details the unique shape of the soleplate, with a very visual bend through the midfoot to heel.

Breaking In
Asics has done a very nice job of ensuring you are getting a comfortable boot from first wear. They are designed to fit snugly while offering plenty of protection throughout. This I didn’t notice so much, but it is quite possible that my focus was more on the heel gradient. Besides the heel gradient, they were very comfortable right through the first few training sessions and offered no hotspots.

But then there is that heel gradient….
So here is the thing, the raised heel is extremely unique and Asics claim it ultimately does have its benefits – but you are going to need time to really adjust to what it offers. Initially while wearing them, I had moments where I felt like Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality wearing Stilettos for the first time (slight exaggeration, but you get my point!) It is a really new and unique feeling and there is a window of re-training that you need to go through. Your standing position is very different and causes you to position yourself slightly more forward than in a regular pair of boots.

In-Game Performance
You get a super soft K-leather upper on this release, and it creates excellent touch and feel on the ball. There is very strategic stitching right across the front of the boot, intended to allow for more natural foot movement. It upper is soft enough to allow for excellent feel, yet thick enough to give you much needed protection. I also found they felt great to strike shots in – that was, of course, once I adjusted and became familiar with the heel gradient! Once broken in, the soleplate also impresses with terrific flexibility right through the sole. It all results in a surprisingly high performing boot.

Design
There are currently several different colorways to choose from in the range, with all of them offering pretty appealing looks. The boot I tested comes in a clean Pearl White/Navy, while there is also a darker, more subtle option available, in a Black/Pacific Blue. Choosing the right colorway comes down to personal taste.

How Do They Fit?
Length wise, they fit very much true to size. In terms of width, they are a mixed batch. When you look at the soleplate, it seems like the midfoot is extremely narrow. But, when you put on the boots you find they offer plenty of width and decent support. If you need a wide fit they are worth checking out.

Negatives
The biggest negative is obviously the adjustment period to start, and to be honest I can’t see the technology working for all players. If you need a boot that works right now, these are not the right choice. My advice is to buy a pair and use them over a few weeks to sync them with your movements. Another negative is the fabric tongue – it definitely soaks in water. Some sort of synthetic would offer an improvement for future releases.

Summary
Asics claim that the Lethal Tigreor is the most sophisticated soccer boot ever built, and to be honest I really don’t argue their point! In essence, you are getting a completely redesigned boot that offers a surprising, yet refreshing, new option for players. From the heel gradient to the insole, everything about them is different. I definitely enjoyed wearing them, but you have to consider the fact that time is necessary to adjust to what they offer. Some players will benefit from them, while others might be better sticking to a regular design. The opportunity to reduce injury is definitely an appealing aspect of the boot, and it doesn’t hurt to have an extra element to help you stay injury free. But ultimately the key to avoiding injury is stretching and taking care of your body and not a boot! In terms of player position, these fit the hybrid mold and will be useful for all types of player on the field. You get solid protection, while they weigh in at a decent 9.6oz. With this type of release, it is easy to foresee Asics becoming a player in the US market over the next few years!
