You can call this somewhat of a “surprise arrival” as I wasn’t expecting a pair for review – but having the Puma King Finale SL in hand, I am excited about testing them! Puma has followed a growing trend by producing a lightweight version of its heritage boot. I’m not quite sure that the King was originally designed to be lightweight, and I certainly hope this is not the direction Puma are headed with the boot, but having a lightweight version to choose from is certainly not a bad thing!

Everything about the Dark Navy/White/Team Orange colorway looks pretty traditional and the initial images released capture exactly what the boots look like in person.

Right out of the box you can feel the difference in the upper, with the leather around the strike zone substantially thinner. The tongue has also been modified to the extremes, with the fold over tongue completely removed. Mixing these with the removal of a feel counter, the final product is a 7.9 oz boot. From initial reaction, I can’t say there are many obvious areas to distinguish these from the King Finale, but I plan to get them into testing next week to see how they compare. Stay tuned for a full review to come in the next few weeks. One other important note; Puma include a pretty awesome, black leather boot bag in the package – great bonus!

For those looking to pick up a pair, they are retailing for $199.99 and are available at soccer.com.

There is a traditional look about this release, but under the hood the offer what you don’t expect! The new Puma King Finale SL weighs in at a pretty appetizing 7.9oz, which represents a 1.3oz drop from the regular King Finale. Off course, it is the regions where the boot has been trimmed down that is important for players who might be considering a pair.

This version of the boot comes in a Dark Navy/White/Team Orange colorway and the retail price will sit around the $199.99 mark to start. That is a substantial increase for a release in the King range, but as we know, creating lightweight cleats is the current trend and it automatically results in higher valuations.

Creating an SL
In order to drop the weight of the boot to 7.9oz, puma has made some significant changes. For example:

Cut off tongue – not only has the amount of fabric used in the tongue been been cut back, but the fold over tongue has been completely removed, an aspect I am very pleased about!

K-leather upper slimmed – Puma still use a K-leather upper, but they have modified it to be thinner. This improves feel on the ball but reduces protection.

Heel Counter trimmed – The heel counter has been completely trimmed down, with any excess material removed.

Sticking with a K-leather upper is obviously a smart move on Puma’s part. Introducing anything else on the range would have been sacrilegious – I am sure it is something that was considered in Puma offices somewhere! But, players have expectations about the range and although lightweight is probably not one of those expectations, it is a feature that will have fans eager to test out a pair. Another interesting aspect is that we are seeing pro players wearing them – something we have not seen from SL versions released by other companies. Thierry Henry has been one of the high-profile players you might have spotted with a pair on this weekend.

I am definitely eager to test out a pair, especially because of the positive vibes I encountered through testing the King Finale. These don’t compete with the lightest boots on the market, but they are one of the lightest k-leather upper boots you will find. Finally, it seems like they will offer attacking players in particular another fantastic option to choose from! Stay tuned for a review and more details in coming weeks.

The first Spring looking release of the year has hit the market, coming in the form of the Puma V1.11. We are pretty familiar with eccentric releases from Puma and this Dresden Blue/White/Lime Punch offers a combo of colors that sway well away from tradition. Reaction to the release has been very mixed, with a distinct divide between those that like them and those that hate them. Either way, those that wear them will have a boot that is ready to take you into the summer season!

The boot is in itself a solid performer and is currently the boot of choice of several top-flight players including Man City’s Sergio Aguero. Having recently tested the V1.11, I can tell you that the lightweight nature of the boot suited my game and I found them to be an effective tool when it comes to acceleration. You are also getting an extremely durable upper that is designed to last, with the upper to soleplate bonded and cemented together effectively. The lace cover also has an affective purpose, as it doubles as a lace cover while allowing you full access to the laces.

It is important to note that sizing should be considered before buying a pair of V1.11. If you are not familiar with Puma shoes, they generally fit tight and the V1.11 features a unique box toe design – so I recommend going a half size up. For those of you who know their size in previous V series releases, these fit very similarly, with some additional width at the top of the boot.

For those that want something a little, Puma are also releases a K-Leather version of the boot that offers a more efficient first touch on the ball. They retail for a slightly higher $199, but while testing the K-Leather version, I found they were my preferred choice due to the uppers flexible nature.

If you decide to pick up a pair of Synthetic V1.11′s, they retail for around $180.

Straight off the bat, I can tell you that simply looking at pictures of this new colorway in the Puma PowerCat 1.12 series really doesn’t do them justice. It comes in an official Black/Dark Shadow/White/Lime Punch, but the Dark Shadow upper that sits around the ankle region offers an almost metallic look that differentiates it from other releases. Mixed with a prime Black K-leather upper and dynamic Lime Punch detailing, you get a very modern, vintage boot.

The PowerCat 1.12 has become known as the “Fabregas” boot since the Barcelona playmaker made a controversial switch from Nike. This latest release is only the 2nd colorway we have seen in the range and it is the first dark toned version.

Having tested the PowerCat 1.12 recently, I encountered no major problems other than some scuffing on the white upper. The major talking point of the release lies along the strike zone, where you will find Puma’s newly innovated PST, or Power Shooting Technology. It is comprised of two separate regions of TPU, both featuring different densities and serving opposite functions. In terms of sizing, the one company I regularly encounter issues with is Puma – but they seem to have got these spot on! Length wise, they are absolutely true to size and make for a perfect fit.

This version has an initial retail price of $180.

A pair of Puma Speed Star’s arrived in the door last week, and although I haven’t had an opportunity to test them yet, I did get a chance to snap some sweet shots of them. Over the past few days I have spotted some ridiculous deals on them – so it seems like a good time to at least give you some feedback right now on what to expect from them, with a full review to follow.

The pictured pair are the New Navy/Fluo Orange/PUMA Silver colorway.

One unique feature about these boots is that they are designed with a microfiber Tech Suede upper – making them a very durable indoor shoe. They won’t scuff easily and I can see them producing an extended life for players who care about their shoes. Although it is worth noting that there have been some comments surrounding the upper and soleplate separating along the font of the shoe.

The ankle lining sits slightly higher than your conventional shoe, offering more support for players through the midfoot. The one downside I see about that is there is a greater opportunity for the shoe to rub along your ankle. It is a case of taking time to ensure they break in without causing any discomfort.

They also feature Puma’s Arch Tech support – meaning that if you are a player that needs arch support while you play, these are a great option!

The outsole is a non-marking rubber that features a pivot point (just under the big-toe joint) for grip and flexibility.

Weight wise, they come in at a fantastic 8.6oz. This is very light for an indoor shoe and is attributed to the Tech Suede upper.

In terms of size, they fit just a tad bit long. If I could choose again, I would order down a half size from my regular fit.

The latest power boot to hit the market comes in the form of the creative Puma PowerCat 1.12, or PWR-CT 1.12. The PowerCat line has dramatically changed through its existence and this edition offers a very unique final package. Right after release, the response from players was extremely popular, with the boots design being one of the most positive aspects. And then there was the fact that Cesc Fabregas made the surprising decision to jump ship from the Nike CTR360 Maestri to the PowerCat! For testing, I wore a pair of size 9US in the very fresh and bright White Pearl/PUMA Royal/Team Gold colorway and for the first time, I am including a short video to accompany the review – located at the bottom of this page.

Breaking In
To be honest, I didn’t find these to be the easiest boot in the world to break-in. The soleplate does eventually produce a really nice fit, but starting out they were a little stiff. I wore them for 2 training sessions before trying them in a game and this proved effective. The upper easily molds to your feet and feels great on the ball, K-leather again seems to be the winning formula! I was hesitant about how the Power Shooting Zone would feel through first wear, but it didn’t cause any problems. Matched with strategically positioned stitching across the front of the strike zone, it moves pretty much in unison with your foot. Because they are a little above the average weight of boots currently released (10.4oz) you get plenty of padding, particularly through the heel, which is nice.

3D Power Shooting Technology
Along the strike zone, you will find Puma’s newly innovated SD PST, or Power Shooting Technology. It is comprised of two separate regions of TPU, both featuring different densities and serving opposite functions. The blue region is a soft TPU that is positioned to retract and allow the ball to cushion against your foot, aiding in first touch and control. The Gold bars are a more solid TPU that offer more rebound as the ball contacts the region, particularly as you strike shots.

Does It Work?
The concept definitely does – but in reality it is tough to tell exactly how much of an impact it has on your game. The key question I have received is “Do the two regions counteract each other?” Puma has placed each piece of technology pretty effectively and with its own purpose on the boot. The blue touch/control TPU sits right across the region where you should be controlling the ball as you dribble and it is angled slightly down to ensure it doesn’t conflict with the gold power/rebound TPU. Plus, the Gold TPU sits right where you should be contacting the ball on solid shots. Of both pieces, I found the Gold TPU to be more effective and useful. You definitely get more pop out of shots and there is a nice rebound effect that will be particularly useful to players who prefer power over placement. I also tested to see if it offered any benefits in terms of putting more swerve on shots – this proved inconclusive.

Everything Else Performance
In terms of traction, Puma again stick with a similar blade configuration that is pretty effective. The blades are long enough to offer excellent twist and turn on firm ground while also working efficiently for the most part on turf. The only time I did question them as while playing in wet conditions on turf, they gave out once or twice as I tried to accelerate.

Something I really like is the tongue design. Puma allow it to be very breathable and have placed a slit on the top, so it forms and hugs your ankle comfortable.

Design
Initial feedback after release was centered on how good the boots looked! Puma put together an excellent combo of colors - White Pearl/PUMA Royal/Team Gold – that has really grasped the attention of fans. Personally, I feel like the gold detailing has a lot to do with it, as it adds a more sophisticated look. Plus, the 3D PST region gives the boot a curious look, and it makes you want to know more about the boot. Since they are white, you need to consider the fact they will need regular care. There are darker colorways coming soon.

How Do They Fit?
The one company I regularly encounter sizing issues with is Puma – but they seem to have got these spot on! Length wise, they are absolutely true to size and make for a perfect fit. If you are a player looking for a wider fit, these make for a solid option. From the midfoot, right through the forefoot, you get plenty of room and nice stretch to ensure your foot is not cramped.

Negatives
The biggest problem was scuffing that occurred around along the front of the boot. This is related to using them on turf and the white colorway is also a factor. Check out the video below for more details. It is definitely something to take into consideration if you are looking for a long term option.

The Skinny Summary
Highlight: Stealing Cesc Fabregas from Nike before releasing this boot was a very smart business move from Puma, and I am sure it won over a lot of new fans without them knowing how the boots test.
Category: In actuality, they are a solid power boot with some neat technology, the 3D PST Zone. Designed to offer both better touch and additions power, you are getting a hybrid of sorts.
Weight: They come in at 10.4oz, which is slightly above average although ideal for a power boot. It is noticeable if you are familiar to wearing some of the lightweight boots currently on the market.
Would I Buy Them: If you are looking for something new that looks really fashionable, they are a good option and I would probably fork out on a pair for that reason – but considering durability, they are not the best value for money currently on the market – retail around $180.
Player Position: Cesc is a playmaker, so add that to the list – but I think center-backs and strikers will benefit most. As a winger, I enjoyed them but there are better options (like the V1.11 SL!)

The latest Puma King Finale colorway has been released, with Puma choosing to alter the look in a very subtle way. The official colorway is White/Team Orange/Navy and it is the Orange detailing through the boot that separates them from the original release in the silo. The look is very clean and continues to give players an opportunity to look classy in one of the most consistent boots on the market!

Since the King range has been around for such a long time, you know that you are getting quality when you put them on. The first thing you will notice about these boots when you take them out of the box is the wonderful leather smell! And when you get them in your hands they simply feel like a quality boot, with the leather creasing under your fingers. In the first game, they felt a little stiff and it took a little bit to adjust to the actual fit. But when these boots actually mold to your feet you feel a real connection with them. The leather just oozes class and I felt extra confident dribbling with the ball.

If you want a boot built on style and quality look no further than the ever classic Puma King Finale. The leather is the absolute highlight of this boot, and another big positive is the price of a pair, a very competitive $130! In terms of availability, they are scheduled to hit the US market in early January.

Things just got a little busier around here with the arrival of another boot – this time it is the Puma PWR-CT 1.12 – something I am not complaining about! Since their release, these boots have received a lot of positive attention, with Cesc Fabregas the key player in Puma’s attempt to control the power market. Some of you are already have the PowerCat 1.12 in testing, so I am excited to get these going in some games.

As you might have spotted in the image above, I have already had an opportunity to take them out for a run around and some pics. First impression is that they are a little stiff starting out, but the strike zone has something quite different about it! Stay tuned for more details and a full review of the boots in the next few weeks.

For those of you looking to pick up a pair, the White Pearl/PUMA Royal/Team Gold colorway comes in around the $180 mark.

They offer a pretty opposite look to the limited edition V1.10 Kanji release that hit the market last year – without the entertaining graphic aspect of course! You have to love how Puma can crank out bright, funky releases and make them look strangely appealing. And this is one boot that will be extremely easy to spot on field.

The boot is in itself a solid performer, having recently tested the V1.11, I can tell you that the lightweight nature of the boot suited my game and I found them to be an effective tool when it comes to acceleration.

They retail for a slightly higher $199, but during testing I found that the K-Leather version was my preferred choice due to the uppers flexible nature.

If you decide to pick up a pair of Synthetic V1.11′s, they retail for around $180.

If Puma were trying to make a statement with their new PowerCat 1.12 series they have done so with this release. It is not often that I get to refer to a colorway using one color, but this is a White/White/White release – or a whiteout! I mean, realistically I can’t even tell if you will see the below images or not!! (I joke of course) During testing, Cesc Fabregas wore this colorway, sending Puma lovers into a frenzy, and it seems like Puma has decided to take advantage of the clean cut colorway’s popularity. But the most important aspect of the boot is this: These are a limited edition release, with only 50 pairs of the White colorway available at soccer.com.

I am extremely surprised to see such an unusual colorway released by Puma, but lets be honest it is new, fresh, and definitely appealing since they are limited edition. There are bound to be players who feel the look is slightly boring or who have concerns about keeping them clean (this is a legitimate concern!) but having the opportunity to own such a unique look can’t be passed up – these are sure to be a collectors item. I can see plenty of players checking behind the couch for extra cash in order to get cash together for a pair!

Puma has drastically changed things up with this release, choosing a new focus for the silo and slimming things down. You are getting a more streamlined boot that focuses on combining power and control, while maintaining a decent level of protection. The upper is split into two sections; the front is a soft K-leather, ensuring you are getting great touch on the ball, while the lateral region is a lightweight microfiber that supports the midfoot and helps to keep the weight down. Rather than being a Power boot, these sort of drift towards a playmaker mold.

If you are interested in being on 50 to own a pair in the US, they retail for $180 – the same price as the White/Puma Royal colorway. But realistically, the price should not be a concern – ordering a pair before they sell out should be!
