Messi Personalized F50 adiZero Released

Messi adiZeroLionel Messi has again been given the honor of having his own personalized soccer boot created. This version of the Adidas F50 adiZero comes in a Metallic Gold/Black/White color that looks very similar to the Sun Yellow version that the likes of Jose Altidore wore at the World Cup in South Africa. The only real difference is the trim and some detailing…and of course the fact that they have been tailored for Messi!

The detailing on the boot comes in a very unique, almost mustard, color. Adidas have chosen to go with a black tongue and laces, along with black studs to polish off the design. They come in the synthetic version, so you are getting the ultimate lightweight boot at 5.8oz.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of the colors. The mustard/gold really throws it off in my opinion. But then again, who am I to question what Lionel Messi wears on his feet. Having tested the full adiZero range, I can tell you that they are a great boot performance wise, and they are surprisingly comfortable to break in for being a super lightweight cleat.

Puma V1.10 SL Preview

Just a quick video I took yesterday while testing the new Puma V1.10 SL, a full review of the superlight boot will be ready by this weekend. If you are going to order them before reading the review, make sure to order a full size larger as they fit extra tight. Also note that the Puma PWR-C 1 soccer ball in the video, which is also in testing!

Dealing With the Problem of Preseason Blisters

With preseason fast approaching, and your new pair of boots ready to break in, there is a must have item that I recommend all players have fast access today – blister band-aids! We have all had blisters at some point in our playing career, and for some reason they always seem to come at the wrong time. Even though there is no quick fix solution to help you heal overnight, there are some products out there that are designed to improve healingBlister Band-Aid time while also protecting the wound.

In my bag, I carry a pack of Johnson & Johnson Advanced Healing Adhesive Band-aids. I find them to be very effective and they are useful if you have them at the right time. Basically, all you need to do is apply the band-aid over your wound (your foot needs to be dry) and leave it on for a day or two. They are sterilized for use on open wounds and they come with Compeed Moisture Seal™ Technology that helps them stick to your foot really well. I have worn these during games on occasion without them falling off. They won’t take away the pain, but I have found that they do help and they “promote fast blister healing” (according to the box!)

You can find them at pretty much any local pharmacy like a CVS or Rite Aid, with the best part being the price as they are very affordable. You can get a pack of six for around $5.

There are also other options to consider like the Spenco blister kit and the Pro-Tec Liquicell Blister Bands. I have not tested either, but they have different properties that might be useful to help with blister problems. Both are available at Soccer.com. If you end up testing them (or have) let us know how they work out!

Pele Sports 1970 Review

Pele Sports 1970

Right before the World Cup started this summer in South Africa we got a first glimpse at the new Pele Sports range. I have to admit, when I first heard about the release I was pretty excited knowing that a boot was going to be designed through the inspiration of one of the best players to ever have graced a pitch. Pele Sports have placed a large emphasis on delivering top quality cleats for use by anyone, regardless of circumstance. This means establishing value at different price points and including features not usually found in competitive boots. Top of the Pele Sports list is the 1970, which I have had the chance to test out over the past few weeks! For testing, I wore a size 9US in the Black/Yellow colorway.

Whats with the leather?
The first thing you will notice about the 1970 is the incredibly shiny leather upper. I have spent a lot of timing marveling at how it actually looks and feels! The entire upper of the 1970′s is a one-piece kangaroo leather, one-piece in order to minimize seams. The leather undergoes an incredible 150 separate processing steps, some of which include:

  • Hi-tech polymer treatments provide permanent water resistance, yet preserve breathability.
  • A permanent branding process prevents fading and keeps the K-leather color-fast.
  • A secondary tanning process protects against sweat damage.
  • A friction enhancing treatment is impregnated in the fiber structure of the leather.  This means it won’t wear off, like a coating treatment.

Fit and Size
One important thing to note is the size. Length wise, I could have done with a half size smaller. My advice is to order down a half size, so if you are a size 9US go with a size 8.5US. They also have plenty of room for those of you with wide feet!

Breaking In
Breaking the Pele Sports 1970 in was a breeze. I wore them for 2 training sessions before getting them into a game. I encountered no blisters and no discomfort, although at times the soleplate felt a little sluggish. I spent 5 minutes bending the sole of each boot in order to loosen them up and this did the trick. In the second or third game, when the cleats felt like they had fully molded to my feet, I started to notice that while running, contact with the ground felt very smooth, almost like the boot is designed with impact absorption in mind.

Comfort and Performance
These are a super comfy boot full-stop. Pele Sports have invested plenty of time ensuring that the design incorporates a high level of quality padding to keep your feet safe. The insert in particular offers great protection and is pretty thick compared to other brands. The actual boot has plenty of padding that feels good surrounding your feet. The dual-density compression molded midsole absorbs shock and keeps the foot more comfortable and I found this to be effective. While wearing in games I never felt the need to take them off – very important for players who play on a regular basis. In terms of performance, I felt like the 1970 played its role, but at times I wanted a little more from them.

Weight
With a high level of comfort comes weight, and I felt like that held me back at times, although this is something that Pele Sports are aware of. The boot weighs in at 11.7oz. When I asked the company about this they stated that “While we find the new superlight boots very interesting from a design perspective, we wonder about their utility for a true all-around player.  By our definition, every player should be prepared to track back on defense, make hard challenge when necessary and play aggressively for 90 minutes.  To do so requires great fit, support and comfort.”

Pele Sports 1970 Tongue Pele Sports K-Leather

Technology
I can’t get past the leather on these boots, it is something absolutely unique to the market and I love it! Trust me when I say that if you get your hands on a pair, you will spend time holding them to get a taste for the feel! While testing, the area around the strike zone lost some of its gleam, but the K-Leather itself worked out fantastically and really molded to my foot. Another development is that Pele Sports have ramped up the midsole by 5mm in the heel area for improved Achilles tendon support.

Negatives
I think my main negative was addressed by the Pele Sports team, and that was the weight issue. But, it is clear that these boots have been designed with comfort and an increased level of protection in mind. They ended up breaking in really well, but I did feel a little sluggish in them at times. Again, I simply had to work on loosening up the soleplate to resolve this issue. The final thing that irked my was the tongue that I never felt at times got in the way a little. I had a similar problem while testing the Diadora Kobra K, where I actually didn’t know where to place the strap underneath the boot.

Pele Sports Soccer Cleats

Summary
I have a feeling we are going to hear a lot more about Pele Sports in the near future. They have created something completely unique for the market, which they needed to do in order to make an impact. And the fact that their top line boot is priced at a reasonable $160 also helps (although I do realize that this is still a lot of money!) In terms of positions, these cleats are pretty versatile. They offer a great deal of comfort and protection, so they are more than suitable for defenders. They are also a good option for strong strikers who need good touch and a boot that will aid in shot power. Overall, I would highly recommend checking out a pair if you get an opportunity.

Budget Buys – What To Get For Under $60

It is that time of year again, soccer season is upon us! Whether you are heading to college preseason, playing on a club team or heading back to school, one of the most important things you are going to need is a pair of boots that you can trust. You need a pair that will help play to your full potential at all times, allowing you to impress with the skills you have perfected over the summer!

Well, I for one know the importance of buying on a budget. While I played in college, I chose to wear a $50 Lotto Zhero Evolution over higher priced boots as they filled what I needed and expected from a boot. With all the high priced releases currently hitting the market, I thought it would be worth exploring more economical options, here is the best of the under $60 mark.

Adidas F10 trxAdidas F10 TRX
The new adiZero F50 range has broken the boundaries of lightweight soccer cleats, while offering an unexpected level of high comfort. The F10 doesn’t have the bonus of being superlight, but at 9.4oz you are still getting a boot that won’t weigh you down. The cleat is designed to look like a leather version, as it has stitching across the front, but it is actually made of a synthetic material.
What makes them a good purchase? They look very similar to their more expensive brother, the F50, while offering a great level of comfort for a lightweight boot.
Price: $49.99

Nike CTR360 LibrettoNike CTR360 Libretto
Nike have done a terrific job focusing the CTR360 release on a specific player on the market – the playmaker. And with the Libretto, they have upheld their desire to release a cracker of a boot that gives the playmaker on a budget a boot to call their own. These look exactly like the Maestri, with the added bonus of actually being made of a full grain leather. They also weigh in at a decent 10oz.
What makes them a good purchase? They look very similar to the CTR360 Maestri and are made of a full grain leather. Because they are designed for playmakers, you are getting a very specific boot.
Price: $54.99

Umbro SX Valor PremierUmbro SX Valor Premier
These are the cheapest boot on our list, but they might be one of the best in terms of value for money considering their list price is $84. One of the most impressive things about Umbro is their ability to produce high quality boots at decent prices. The Valor Premier is another boot created using a full grain leather. They also have a quilted vamp and covered lacing system, allowing you to have a larger strike zone.
What makes them a good purchase? Umbro offer extremely competitive prices in general, but add a sale price and these are even better value! Covered lacing system is a bonus.
Price: $39.99

Puma v4.10 TricksPuma v4.10 Tricks
Weighing in at 8.4oz. the V4.10 Tricks are the lightest boots on the list. Right now they are on sale for $49 (regularly $80) so these are another pair that just manage to make it onto the list. They are a quality boot that look the part. Created using a synthetic upper, you are going to want to order up half a size as they fit tight. Part o the Tricks range released during the World Cup.
What makes them a good purchase? Right now they are a great deal. Plus they look very unique as part of the Tricks range, not many players will have this design.
Price: $54.99

Just Arrived – Puma V1.10 SL

Puma V1.10 SL

Currently the lightest soccer cleat on the market, the Puma V1.10 SL is built around pure speed. There has been a lot of talk about the sizing as they seem to fit a lot tighter than regular sized cleats. Well I have managed to get my hands on 2 sizes (9.5US and 10US) to be able to compare how they really fit. Both pairs arrived today and it is quiet evident that you are going to want to order up in size when buying these. The size issue lies around the design of the toe box, as it is a lot pointier than on other soccer cleats that are more rounded.
I can’t confirm whether these will stretch, but what I can tell you right now is this:

  • If you want a snug, tight fit or have a thin shaped foot order a half size up (normally a 9US – order a 9.5US)
  • If you want a comfortable fit or have a wide fitting foot, order up a full size (normally a 9US – order a 10US)

I have decided to use 10US for testing. They look sweet and just like the adiZero’s they feel superlight. One of the areas you can tell there is a difference lies in the tongue. The soleplate seems very flexible, so I am hoping they break in nicely! The full review will up in the next two weeks, stay tuned for more updates.

Two weeks until the start of the new EPL season….I am not going to lie, I am pretty pumped! Waking up early for Fox Soccer Channel on Saturday mornings, nothing better (except actually being at the games of course!!) Over the past few weeks, I have spotted a few good articles and thought this morning would be a good time to share them!

  • WomensSoccerDaily.com have a really good review of the women’s version of the Puma PWR-C 2.10 FG. Personally, I like the design of these boots!
  • I have pointed this one out recently, but Scoutme.com have a great article about how to manage an ankle sprain. Always a good one to refer back to. (although I never wish for injuries!)
  • Puma recently released a new initiative to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer called Puma Project Pink. Check it out at Attackingsoccer.com.
  • Darren Bent will be gearing up in the new Umbro GT Pro come the start of the season. Blog.Umbro.com have the official interview.
  • How many pairs of Adidas Predators can one guy own? Ask Mr. Predator, or check in at Mud.Sweat.Badges.co.uk for the story.
