Lionel Messi Wins Record Fifth Golden Shoe Award

Messi Golden Shoe 2018

Lionel Messi received his fifth Golden Shoe award yesterday, claiming it for the 2017/18 La Liga season. The Barcelona forward scored 34 times in 36 La Liga games, pipping Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to the prize after the Egyptian netted 32 times in the Premier League.

During the season, Messi wore several versions of his own signature adidas Nemeziz 17+ boots. This included a White/Legend Blue colorway, a signature King Messi Black version, some Skystalkers, and the pair released as part of the Cold Blooded Pack.

The five seasons that Messi has won the Golden Shoe in 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2016-17. Here is a tally of the goals he scored in those seasons to top the charts:

2009/10 — 34 goals
2011/12 — 50 goals
2012/13 — 46 goals
2016/17 — 37 goals
2017/18 — 34 goals

The forward again leads La Liga’s top scorers chart with 14 goals in this campaign, more than any other player in the top five European leagues. And he made the 50 goals mark for the 2018 calendar year, after netting a hattrick last week..

Oh, and in case you were counting, this fifth award puts Messi one ahead of Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 4 awards and 11 goals so far this season in Serie A.
