Up Close With the Third Generation Nike Dream Speed Superfly

Nike Dream Speed 3 Superfly Up Close

It is the third iteration in the Nike Dream Speed series, and likely one of the most creative we will see in the range. Nike has taken the Mercurial series – Superfly and Vapor – and treated them a wild upper design that features some really iconic patterns.

When images were initially released, I’ve got to be honest and admit I wasn’t really impressed. They seemed a little too busy, and without knowing the backstory behind the pattern, they didn’t make a lot of sense. But now having a pair in hand, I’ve changed my tune dramatically. Visually, they are pretty stunning and there is a lot of to unpack right throughout the boot. This includes a shimmer effect where colors transition from purple to gold and then a blue.

The first thing to note is that Nike has gone with a Black/White design for the upper. That is the obvious part, but where they take on their complexity is in how there are highlighted with several different patterns, all of which have their own individual meaning:

  1. Wave patterns that characterize quickness.
  2. A dotted pattern around the heel that denotes formations used by winning teams across the years.
  3. A gridded, waved pattern across the forefoot represents the rippling effect made by a goal when scored.
  4. Safari print through the instep that pays homage to 10 years since their on pitch debut.

Realistically, it is difficult for images to do these justice – there is so much going on! Rather than talking more about it, I’m going to let a series of images do the honors. This pair was sent over by Nike and really offered us the opportunity to uncover what they have going on.

A 360-degree Flyknit construction wraps the foot for a second-skin fit, with a new high-tenacity yarn and a 1-piece lining creating a close, secure feel on the field. Added to that, a new ultra-thin NikeSkin overlay gets you closer to the ball for high-speed maneuvers. Underfoot, Nike has created a new Aerotrak zone along with a slightly stiffer chassis to help supercharge traction. As is the case with the entire Mercurial series, these are designed to fit tight. And they do! You need to be ready for a snug and secure fit, with the entire boot wrapping your foot like a cocoon. Your foot will be locked down inside, with an upper that is slightly more rigid than you’d expect from a yarn style material.
