After signing a new three-year deal with PSG that includes a £100m signing on bonus (he will earn £1m a week) and a say in transfers and any managerial appointments, Kylian Mbappé could be one of the most powerful players in soccer right now! His new contract is absolutely bonkers and was enough to persuade the French striker not to sign for Real Madrid.
With all of that in mind, it got us thinking about his boot contract and what he has been wearing. Is he the type of player that is a little more demanding with a desire to have numerous custom boots that make his standout? I’d argue not. He has followed the trend of Nike Mercurial releases, wearing highlight releases as they drop. Back in November, he received and wore a pair of signature “Mbappé Flames” Mercurial Superfly. They featured a design that represented him as player, highlighted by a stylized KM flame insignia and layered flames graphics. He wore them for several weeks, then switched between several other Mercurial Superfly colorways that were released by Nike.
Incredibly, since the start of February he has been wearing the same pair of Mercurial Dream Speed 5, a release that was more associated with Cristiano Ronaldo. That is the last four months wearing the same colorway, closing them out by scoring a glorious hattrick on the final day of the season. Why he chose to stick with the same colorway for so long is a mystery to us, but it shows he has loyalty to a boot that provides him with what he needs on the pitch.
So, what are we to expect going forward? There is no doubt that Nike see him as an important player in their collection of athletes. This latest contract puts his square in the spotlight and elevates his international stature. More signature releases are definitely on the way – that is the direction Nike will take to celebrate his style and play, using the KM logo and stories that represent his career and personality. And in our opinion, he will be the feature player to take over Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in the next 5 years!
Next boot to watch out for: a signature pair of next-generation “Mbappé” Zoom Mercurial Superfly.
