Lionel Messi just surpassed Gerd Muller’s record number of goals in a calendar year by scoring both goals in Barcelona’s 2-0 win this past weekend. It takes his tally to a magnificent 86 goals in 66 games and increases his stake in the debate about who is the greatest player of all-time. And with two games remaining this year, he could increase that number. For those interested in how he got there, below is a breakdown by boots.
Goals #1 + #2 – High Energy/Electricity/White
Messi started 2012 where he left off in 2011, scoring goals in the initial F50 adiZero miCoach colorway. Definitely not the best look we saw in the range, but they proved to be the perfect boot to start Messi’s record year.
Goals #3 + #4 – Ballon d’Or Edition
With back to back to back World Player of the Year awards came this exclusive Messi colorway. They featured some personalized details on the side, including the years he won the Ballon d’Or.
Goals #5 through #46 – Prime Blue/Core Energy
Messi actually switched to these around a clash with Real Madrid, instead of the Ballon d’Or colorway, which featured Real Madrid colors. This version was Messi’s most productive boot.
Goals #47 through #51 – Runnin White/Lab Lime
We saw Messi debut these in the Copa Del Rey final, where he managed to bag himself a debut goal in the colorway. A pretty decent looking boot on pitch, they also helped Messi cross the 50 goal mark.
Goals #52 through #74 – Metsilver/Infrared
Another colorway that seemed to be a preferred choice of messi, he amassed an impressive 22 goals while wearing them before this series of the adiZero was retired.
Goals #75 through #86 – Vivid Yellow/Green Zest
The first colorway in the new F50 adiZero III range, Messi surpassed the record and garnered some extra attention around their release. They have become his “multi-goal boots” – every time Messi has scored wearing them, he has bagged a second.
hellll no hes the best and the best we will ever see
I prefer Muller’s Adidas 2000 boots lol. I had the Mullers when the released them in the 90s, best boot I ever wore.
There may be someone better in the future…you never know but I don't think anyone as of now or within the next decade will surpass his record
