He might have just turned 20 years old, but Kylian Mbappé is easily ranked as one of the top soccer players in the World right now. In the 88 games he has played in Ligue 1, he has scored 50 goals and created 23 assists. And this past summer he helped France win the World Cup. Not a bad start!
During his short career, Mbappé has been treated to some special edition releases, but we haven’t seen him with a signature boot yet. That got us wondering; is he the next player in line to get something that comes with his name emblazoned on the box? Do Nike see him as a candidate to be able to market a complete line-up of boots and gear around?
Not only has he worn special edition but he has been in the unique position of being able to provide sneak peaks before release. To date, that has been one of his key role in the Nike franchise, and hey it seems like a pretty fun one. For example, he dropped a first look at the SE Superfly R9 early last year, then he offered up a pre-release glimpse at the Nike GS. He was also one of the players to wear the Vapor360 x Virgil Abloh and Nike offered him a custom pair of Monaco Hypervenom Phantom before he moved to PSG. So, he definitely has a role to play in the brands image.
What does this tell us about Mbappé and his boot choice? Only that he is very versatile in what he will wear. Superfly, Green Speed, Hypervenom. There is one commonality, however, and that is the boot he currently wears. If there is a pair he is most comfortable in, it seems to be the Mercurial Superfly. And here lies what could be the stumbling block to giving Mbappé his own signature line-up. Cristiano Ronaldo is without a doubt the key feature player for the Superfly range, with entire collections created exclusively for him. In reality, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of space for Mbappé right now. It is quite possible that they see him as a future piece, or a player that will follow on the CR7 legacy.
Who knows where things stand in the background and if anything is currently in the works, but I’m looking forward to seeing what a signature KM7 lineup looks like whenever it does eventually drop! What are your guys thoughts?
