New Orleans Saints Kicked to Victory by Under Armour!

As you might be aware, the New Orleans Saints won their first Super Bowl February 7th by beating the Indiana Colts. Yes I am talking American Football! Something you Kicker Garrett Hartley New Orleansmight not have been aware of is the fact that Saints Kicker Garrett Hartley created Super Bowl history by making three 40-plus yard kicks in the same game, all while wearing Under Armour soccer cleats. But what I find to be most intriguing about the whole thing is the fact that he wore 2 different cleats; a Dominate on his kicking foot (right) and a Create on his standing foot (left).

That got me thinking….what properties does each individual cleat hold that makes them suitable for an NFL kicker? Lets break it down, what does a kicker need? Well, first off he needs balance and traction, so he doesn’t slip while running up to strike the ball. His standing foot needs to plant and offer optimal support. For shooting, he needs accuracy and protection. His goal is to put the ball high and between the posts, while being prepared in case a defender dives to block his kick.

  • On his planted foot, Hartley wore an Under Armour Create. The Create fits long, and is supported by a modular protection zone (MPZ), that absorbs shock and offers impact protection for the foot. It also has triangular shaped studs in the forefoot for optimal traction in all directions. While reviewing them I came to the conclusion that they would “become popular with Rugby players, as they offer a  lot of comfort, support and excellent grip”.
  • On his kicking foot, Hartley wore the Dominate. I am a fan of the Dominate and can see why it was his choice for striking the football. The MPZ black area on the front of the cleat, has a dual purpose on these; it helps support the metatarsal bone located in the front of the foot (highly prone to breaking in soccer players) while also enhancing power.I think that fits the bill for any kicker!

So, it all makes sense right! The Create fits the bill in terms of comfort and support, while the Dominate is perfect for someone looking to kick straight and accurate. Hartley had been sporting this combo for the majority of this season and it definitely seemed to be effective. I am sure Under Armour were pretty happy about the fact that Hartley kicked 3 40-plus yard kicks to get into the record book, and I am sure that they will be putting some claim to his record!

Nike RED ‘Lace Up Save Lives’ Campaign

Lace Up Save LivesOver the past few weeks, athletes across the world have been ‘lacing up’ in order to support the RED foundation, set up to fight HIV/AIDS across Africa. I mentioned the “Lace Up Save Lives” campaign in some posts a few weeks back, but not you can actually purchase a pair for yourself. 100% of the proceeds from sales of the laces goes to the Global Fund (www.theglobalfund.org) and to support soccer-based programs to help fight AIDS in Africa. You might have noticed players like Didier Drogba and Andrei Arshavin sporting the laces in their cleats recently, and other stars such as LA Laker’s Kobi Bryant have also joined in the initiative (see video below). It is a really good idea, and it applies for both pro players and those at the way to amateur level. If you want to show your support, you can get a pair at soccer.com for $3.99.

Puma PowerCat Review

Puma PowerCat ImageHere it is, a full review of the Puma PowerCat! Since this is a World Cup year, there is a lot of pressure on the big companies to produce cleats that will represent well on the biggest stage. Puma have already established themselves in the speed category with the V1.10, but up until now they have not really captured the power cleat market. Adidas have the Predator X, Nike now have the T90 Laser III, but Puma only had the V-Kon that never really took off. Well, all that could easily change now with their latest release; the Puma PowerCat 1.10. Last week when they were released, I posted some images to give you an update on how they look. Well, finally after having several opportunities to work these in I finally have a review….and it is all positive! For testing, I wore a size 9 in the Black/White/Wild Lime color.

Breaking In
So, because of an injury, I broke these in over a period of around 4-5 weeks, with a lot of wearing while sitting around! With that being said, Power Powercat Side Viewwhen I actually did get to wear them on the pitch, they broke in very smoothly! Unlike other Puma releases, these fit true to size. That for me is a big plus on what I have personally had to endure with prior Puma releases! One reason for this is due to the fact that these have a round toe unlike the V series (which has a box toe). I didn’t get any blisters and because the fit was true to size, I didn’t endure any foot cramping. It really didn’t take long for these to mold to the fit and shape of my foot. Puma are using a new anatomically shaped PowerLast that is an updated version of the AptoLast. The PowerLast provides additional volume to the forefront and instep of the foot. This allows the sole to follow the true contours of your foot and I have to admit that these create a real glove like fit.

Design
Puma have drifted away from the design of the V-Kon, and what a wise decision that will turn out to be! One of the biggest complaints I heard about the V-Kon was that it looked and felt bulky. This design looks sharper and the lime on black design Puma Powercat Imagereally takes it to another level. Puma have removed a lot of the protection seen on the V-Kon, and some might argue that this takes the cleat out of the Power category. I strongly disagree with that, as there is still plenty of protection and a new front strike feature that allows these cleats the luxury of being a ‘Power Hybrid’ if you will. One of my harshest criticisms in recent times was on the colors being used with new releases. You only have to think back a few months to the release of the intensely yellow Puma V1.10 as an example. Both of the initial Puma releases are simple yet stylish and they are not loud and brash; more of a cleat for the no-nonsense player. Another positive is the fact that Puma have gone with a K-Leather for this release! “Yes”, I hear you also shout, and this is an excellent K-Leather that is super soft.

Puma ‘Cat’
You will find two very strategically placed Puma’s on these cleats. A textured lime colored Puma sites on the inner heal of the cleats, while the outside has a smooth white one. When you are wearing these on the field, both are pretty noticeable and you can see in the image above that they are easy to spot. On the white version of the cleat, the inner Puma is gold while the outer is blue. Rumor has it that Puma have added images of the Puma on both sides in order to increase speed in the cleat (Please note that this is not actually true!!)

Technology
There are a few things of note that Puma have added to the PowerCat. First off is the new 3D Power Shooting Technology. This is the one part of the cleat that everyone asks about, the lime green stripes that run across the strike zone. Well, to feel, these are like little ridges that overlap across the front of the cleat. The official term is SpringTech foam ridges, and they are designed to increase Puma Powercat Imageshooting power while maintaining touch and feel on the ball. The benefit of having this technology is that it has high rebound properties that does not absorb the typical amount of energy on ball impact, meaning more power is released when you shoot. Is it effective? Well it certainly does seem like it serves its purpose. When you strike the ball, you don’t feel the full impact, instead it feels like there is a cushioned layer. The ball does feel like it pings, but I can’t be 100% that it actually adds more power. I like the concept a lot though. Instead of have a large power zone, the 3D Power shooting technology is very minimal and not too invasive. Another addition worth mentioning is the  new Puma PowerLast, you can find more info about this in the ‘Breaking in’ section.

NegativesPuma PowerCat Sole
Rather than being a ‘negative’, this is more of a word of warning/advice. Puma design/placement of the blades makes this a little more difficult to use on turf. I found that because of how the back 3 blades are configured, the boot tends to catch in the turf as you play the ball. Because of this, you should probably check out the PowerCat Turf version before you buy the firm grounds. And I do realize that FG’s are not designed for use on turf, but from my experience, the PowerCat might be more problematic than other boots.

Conclusion
Puma have raised the bar with this release and it is perfect timing for them! The design is sweet, the technology is effective and the comfort is superb! I am a real fan of the fact that Puma are using a K-Leather, they have followed up with the off center lacing, and the 3D Power Shooting technology is a real hit in my books. Once you get your hands on a pair of these you can tell that they are quality. My experience was very positive and I rate these as one of the best boots on the market at this moment. Expect to see a lot of players sporting these during the World Cup in South Africa.

Frank Lampard Talks About the Adidas adiPURE III

This is a really cool video of Frank Lampard and the Kit manager at Chelsea, discussing the Adidas adiPURE III and how Lampard goes about wearing them. I had no idea that Lampard only wears a pair of cleats for 2-3 games before changing to a new pair! It is really interesting to find out about life in a professional locker room! Let me know what you think.

Diadora LX K Pro MG Released in 2 New Colors

Diadora have released their latest colors in the LX K Pro range, making a combined 5 colors currently available. The LX K Pro was one of the first cleats I reviewed for this site, and the cleat is still going strong on the market. I guess that shows that a good thing can last! I really enjoyed wearing them and felt they had a lot of quality to offer. The range was released to honor 60 years of Diadora history, with Francesco Totti serving as the face of the company. The latest colors come in a Red/White/Gold and a White/Black/Gold.

It seems that Diadora have chosen to freshen up the current range. In Italy, their cleats are seen to be top of the bunch with many international players sporting the brand. What Diadora seem to do is focus on what works, rather than continually releasing new ranges. I like their philosophy and to be honest it is refreshing. Rather than having to keep up with the next best thing, you know that you are getting a boot that has been well researched and developed for the market. Having tested the LX K pro and the Maracana, I feel they have a lot to offer players all over the field and would highly recommend them.

Joma Total Fit Released

Joma Total Fit Black AboveThe Joma Total Fit is a pretty unique soccer cleat! In the next few weeks, I plan to test these out and I am intrigued to do so, primarily because of their design. Joma use a single piece of Kangaroo leather for the upper, meaning there are no seems to be seen. The front of the cleat is totally smooth and has no internal stitching. Not only that, but Joma use a new multi-stud design, and a lightweight sole plate (with a more narrow arch) that leaves the cleat weighing in at an impressive 9.4oz! The cleat is made in Spain, with the initial release colors coming in a true black and a true white. Straight up, I am impressed with Joma’s approach to the market by releasing simple colors that don’t detract from what they have to offer performance wise. Burning question of course is “What do these cleats have to offer and how do they actually perform?” and I am really interested to put them through some thorough testing. Keep an eye out for more info and a review to follow pretty soon!

Puma PowerCat 1.10 Released

The Puma PowerCat 1.10 has been released, which means we can finally share the images with you! I am still in the process of finalizing the review for these, but I can tell you right now that these are a great cleat, and a true winner for Puma. Size wise, they fit true to size, which is a super plus considering some of Puma’s recent ‘tight’ releases! They are made of a supersoft K-Leather, and that is one of the huge pluses on this release as they break in so easily! I hope to have the review finalized in the next week after I get one or two more games in, but for now enjoy the images below! You can also get your hands on a pair today. I am currently testing the Black/White/Wild Lime color (as seen below) but there is also a White/Puma White/Team Gold version available.
