Here it is, a full review of the Puma PowerCat! Since this is a World Cup year, there is a lot of pressure on the big companies to produce cleats that will represent well on the biggest stage. Puma have already established themselves in the speed category with the V1.10, but up until now they have not really captured the power cleat market. Adidas have the Predator X, Nike now have the T90 Laser III, but Puma only had the V-Kon that never really took off. Well, all that could easily change now with their latest release; the Puma PowerCat 1.10. Last week when they were released, I posted some images to give you an update on how they look. Well, finally after having several opportunities to work these in I finally have a review….and it is all positive! For testing, I wore a size 9 in the Black/White/Wild Lime color.
Breaking In
So, because of an injury, I broke these in over a period of around 4-5 weeks, with a lot of wearing while sitting around! With that being said, when I actually did get to wear them on the pitch, they broke in very smoothly! Unlike other Puma releases, these fit true to size. That for me is a big plus on what I have personally had to endure with prior Puma releases! One reason for this is due to the fact that these have a round toe unlike the V series (which has a box toe). I didn’t get any blisters and because the fit was true to size, I didn’t endure any foot cramping. It really didn’t take long for these to mold to the fit and shape of my foot. Puma are using a new anatomically shaped PowerLast that is an updated version of the AptoLast. The PowerLast provides additional volume to the forefront and instep of the foot. This allows the sole to follow the true contours of your foot and I have to admit that these create a real glove like fit.
Design
Puma have drifted away from the design of the V-Kon, and what a wise decision that will turn out to be! One of the biggest complaints I heard about the V-Kon was that it looked and felt bulky. This design looks sharper and the lime on black design really takes it to another level. Puma have removed a lot of the protection seen on the V-Kon, and some might argue that this takes the cleat out of the Power category. I strongly disagree with that, as there is still plenty of protection and a new front strike feature that allows these cleats the luxury of being a ‘Power Hybrid’ if you will. One of my harshest criticisms in recent times was on the colors being used with new releases. You only have to think back a few months to the release of the intensely yellow Puma V1.10 as an example. Both of the initial Puma releases are simple yet stylish and they are not loud and brash; more of a cleat for the no-nonsense player. Another positive is the fact that Puma have gone with a K-Leather for this release! “Yes”, I hear you also shout, and this is an excellent K-Leather that is super soft.
Puma ‘Cat’
You will find two very strategically placed Puma’s on these cleats. A textured lime colored Puma sites on the inner heal of the cleats, while the outside has a smooth white one. When you are wearing these on the field, both are pretty noticeable and you can see in the image above that they are easy to spot. On the white version of the cleat, the inner Puma is gold while the outer is blue. Rumor has it that Puma have added images of the Puma on both sides in order to increase speed in the cleat (Please note that this is not actually true!!)
Technology
There are a few things of note that Puma have added to the PowerCat. First off is the new 3D Power Shooting Technology. This is the one part of the cleat that everyone asks about, the lime green stripes that run across the strike zone. Well, to feel, these are like little ridges that overlap across the front of the cleat. The official term is SpringTech foam ridges, and they are designed to increase shooting power while maintaining touch and feel on the ball. The benefit of having this technology is that it has high rebound properties that does not absorb the typical amount of energy on ball impact, meaning more power is released when you shoot. Is it effective? Well it certainly does seem like it serves its purpose. When you strike the ball, you don’t feel the full impact, instead it feels like there is a cushioned layer. The ball does feel like it pings, but I can’t be 100% that it actually adds more power. I like the concept a lot though. Instead of have a large power zone, the 3D Power shooting technology is very minimal and not too invasive. Another addition worth mentioning is the new Puma PowerLast, you can find more info about this in the ‘Breaking in’ section.
Negatives
Rather than being a ‘negative’, this is more of a word of warning/advice. Puma design/placement of the blades makes this a little more difficult to use on turf. I found that because of how the back 3 blades are configured, the boot tends to catch in the turf as you play the ball. Because of this, you should probably check out the PowerCat Turf version before you buy the firm grounds. And I do realize that FG’s are not designed for use on turf, but from my experience, the PowerCat might be more problematic than other boots.
Conclusion
Puma have raised the bar with this release and it is perfect timing for them! The design is sweet, the technology is effective and the comfort is superb! I am a real fan of the fact that Puma are using a K-Leather, they have followed up with the off center lacing, and the 3D Power Shooting technology is a real hit in my books. Once you get your hands on a pair of these you can tell that they are quality. My experience was very positive and I rate these as one of the best boots on the market at this moment. Expect to see a lot of players sporting these during the World Cup in South Africa.
A little while ago I commented that I didn't like the branding so much, it has grown on me a tiny bit. The instep PUMA logo is ok but the outstep one is just way too big.
Unlike traditional swerve technologies, I like the minimalist aspect of this one… seems as though you have much more leather to stretch out (such as top of the foot/sides of the feet) rather than say it taking up most of the instep.
Good review… in this day in age I don't think any of these big companies like PUMA/adidas/Nike really have an excuse for putting out a crappy boot haha.
Very true! But they still end up releasing crazy colors! Compared to the V1.10, these are a dream to wear. One thing I plan on comparing in the next few weeks is how the PowerCat compares to the Total90 Laser's in terms of technology used, right now I am inclined to say the minimalist PowerCat might have better properties..

I haven’t worn the T90III but that boot looks a bit interesting as well to me. The shot shield is a bit weird and I don’t like how it takes up so much of the upper.
I haven’t seen the PowerCat in person but the ridges look so minimal, almost to the point that it doesn’t seem like it does much.
You mention the studs catching on turf?
Ive been wearing the Puma v1.08 fg model for over a year now and during the winter months Im always playing on turf but hardly notice an issue with the heel studs catching (except for isolated incident on slide tackle leaving me with a major sprained ankle).
All recent puma boots including the new v1.10 and this boot all seem to have similar heel stud configuration. Is there something different about the PWRCat? Did you notice this issue with the v1.10?

Does the springtech foam hurt the touch? I heard frthat the ball can fly off your foot when trying to bring down a long ball with that part of the boot. The foam seems to cover up the part of the boot that is used for dribbling, trapping, etc. as well as shooting.

The Springtech foam does not negatively affect touch or control. It is not noticeable when you are playing, Puma have placed each layer very strategically. If anything, it really helps in my opinion!

At last puma is catching up with nike and adidas. They look pretty awesome along with v1.10.

How is the width of the sole plate? I know the upper will stretch, but sole plates that are narrower than my actual soles cause a lot of pain. Would you say its a narrower sole plate like that of the copa mundials, or nice and wide like the predator x?

The sole plate is medium size, it is wider than the Copa Mundials and about even to what the Pred X. I need a medium to wide fit and these were very comfortable for me.

Thanks for the excellent review. I've recently purchased these boots (what we call them on the other side of the Atlantic haha) and am eagerly awaiting their delivery.
I am slightly worried though by what you said about the size. I had the v1.08 previously. I had a size 10 pair and they were a bit tight, verging on too tight. So for these I've ordered a half size up, 10.5. You mentioned that they fit better to your size than before. If size 10 was too tight for me with v1.08 do you think this boot in 10.5 will be ok?

These fit a little longer than the V1.08, but it is better to have a little extra room than a boot that is too tight. If anything, it sounds like they might be a good fit for you.

If i have an adipure 2 size 12, have size should i get for these?

Just a quick question, i am looking to get these online however i am not quite sure what size to get them in? My local store unfortunately does not have them so i tried the Nike T90 Laser III and the Addidas Predator X to check out my size. For both boots, 7.5 uk was tight (no breathing space pretty much) while 8uk had some pinching space at the top. Also, i did not have my football socks with me so i was wearing normal socks at the time. If it helps at all, i currently have my Copa Mundials in 7.5 which fit great.
What size would you recommend?

I bought these shoes recently, about 3 months ago. I loved them right out of the box; they fit great. touch was nice, and the leather is soft. The only problems i have seen is the toes is ripping away from the sole. I have seen this with older predators, but it happened immediatly and now my foot actually slips out of the shoe. I played pretty much everyday and on every surface from turf to mud and the stud arrangement performed in all. These are definitely my number one choice of shoes and I will be getting them again.
Bryan, I've had these boots for a while, but I've only played in them once. And my issue with them was that whilst the width is fine for my wide feet, I've found that the first fin/ridge presses on my fairly large big toe of my left foot, which is quite uncomfortable.
Basically, the question I want to know is: When fully broken in, does the leather on the boot stretch a lot?
Because If it does stretch a decent amount, These boots will fit my feet well, but if not, I'll probably look to sell them whilst they are still in a near new condition.
Bryan, I play as a forward and sometimes as a defender. I am debating between the powercat, predators, and lasers, but I can't decide. which do you think has the most effective technology to improve my shot/drive. I don't do an inside swerve and I like to shoot with an outside swerve sometimes, other than that I strike the ball with my laces straight on with my toe pointing down. Which boot would best support my game?

I found they do stretch – but not a lot. Because of the layered stitching across the front of the boot you should get that little bit extra you need for them to fit well.
Hey Bryan, it's me again. I really want to know what you think about the technology of the boots I mentioned. I'm really looking for the one that will improve the power behind my shot or kick. You seem to be very vague in your descriptions of the "power" technology in your reviews of the cleats, like only saying "it seems to serve a purpose." Please be specific on that aspect of the boots I mentioned. Sorry for asking again, it's just that these cleats are really expensive for me and i want to pick the right one

Stephen, I don't know about the Pred X, as I don't have them, but I have both the Powercats and the Laser III's and judging by the description of how you hit the ball, then the Powercats would probably be best suited to your game.

are these boots suited for fast forwards? I have heard that they feel relatively light and are great for shots, but I've also heard that they are not truly suited for strikers. I just ordered them (new for only $65 by the way
) and I just want to know, will they be a burden in any way to a fast forward?
Also I heard the laces are very long, is this true? I am not a fan of tying the laces around the bottom.

They should suit pretty well! They are not super light, but as a winger I found them to be a good boot and still use them as a back-up from time to time. You will like them! Laces do wrap around, you might have to cut them.

You can cut them short and burn the ends to make them hard to fit through the lace holes (*something I can't explicitly recommend doing!)

hey bryan ! , i wanted to know if these or the lasers are heavier ? i wear adizero’s, puma king finale’s, vapor 4… but their all great boots (finale’s probably being the best) but i didnt really wear the laser 3′s and now i wore them more and actually broke them in and their GREAT… to my surprise since I’m comfy in them all that ”weight stuff” didn’t affect me and i was flying ! (although i changed the insoles in laser 3 cause their weird and give blisters) …

My F50.7s have finally died & I'm looking at these to replace them. I'm quite a fast, creative player and usually play out wide or occasionally up front or centre mid. I like the power these would give on shots and accuracy on crossing but I don't want to compromise the lightness of the F50s, do you think these would match my criteria? Are these much heavier? Or have you a better suggestion? Atm a bit torn between Powercat and AdiPure or possibly even v1.10

These match all requirements except weight, although to be honest it is not something you should be too concerned about. They are a very comfortable cleat and only offer positives in terms of striking the ball.

I have the Power Cats, heres what you need to know;
10.4oz, lightest true power cleat.
They both absorb ALOT of water, so if you play often on muddy fields,possibly look elsewhere.
The Shot shield serves 2 functions for me, power and grip on the ball, they are made of rubber and grip the ball very well.
The Powercats actually weigh less than the adi pure 3, but more than the 4, but the benifits are in the increased power and ball control of the powercats.
Adi pures are more comfortable, and may last longer. But depending on if you are looking for the adipure 3 or 4, you could find powercats on websites like World soccer shop for slightly less.
Thanks a lot, looking at getting the FG so not really getting them for muddy pitches so should be ok on that front. Would you recommend them generally as a boot then? I tend to play central mid/wing/up front
